Do you have hope things will get better? How about belief? I really do not. At all. It appears everything is turning to shit and I don't mean to come off as a depressed pessimist, merely realistic.
Whatever the case, I'm trying hard to enjoy what little time I have left on this planet and feeling very grateful I don't have children.

"Very grateful I don't have children" Just fuck off. What's wrong with this sentiment?
The future does look bleak and I can certainly relate to the thought.

I don't know why people would get upset with the "no children" comment, but oh well.
I wonder. I remember thinking when it first came out, that the virus wasn't going to be a big thing. Boy, was I wrong.
I don't know. What I do hope for is that a variant doesn't come along that is strong enough to override vaccines.
I was reading a book on the disaster that was the 14th century - A Distant Mirror by Barbara Tuchman - and how the plagues culled an overpopulated Europe and helped to re-arrange the economic structure.
I also wonder if the world can pull its collective head out of its ass re: climate change. China and India definitely have to get onboard.
And I wonder if those factors will also lead to an even bigger rise in populism/autocracy and the diminishment of democracy.
I don't know how safe a bet humankind has ever been in its somewhat brief habituation of this planet.

Will things get better? I sincerely doubt it. People have become such assholes, humanity is insufferable. Shitty people on both sides. I'm glad I'm old and won't have to deal with this very long. As far as no children -- I really feel badly for my kids. They've got 60-70 years left in this cesspool.

I don't buy the apocalyptic mindset. Call me deluded, but there's no point living a life if you think that everything is going to shit. I don't want to be around people like that as it just doesn't get you anywhere.
Live your life to the best you can by making your home as good as you can and be a helping part of your community. If you love your job that's a bonus. The simpler your life is the better.
I get irate at the "grateful I don't have kids" comments because what sort of message does that send to people who have kids? "Oh I'm glad I'm ok because THEIR LIFE IS GOING TO BE SHIT!" . I understand the reasons why people don't choose to have children, but don't be all sanctimonious about it.

It's also the way those kinds of ideas are phrased. 'I worry about having kids' is an understandable, thoughtful reaction to all the shit going on. 'Thank fuck I don't have kids!' is wanky.

As the father of two grown kids who still sink their money grubbing mitts off their mom and me, there are many a time where I would have gladly foisted them on any anonymous person who would have them. If you could drop them off at the animal shelter, I might have. Sure, I'd miss them for a day or two, but I've lost socks before too and rebounded from those disasters. I'm kidding, but as a dad, I don't take how it's phrased personally at all. It's not going to make me love them any less.

It does seem like that sometimes. Like, couples who have kids are seen as more successful in many ways. This would be a kind of snide 'revenge' for that idea.

No one is forcing you to chime in on my threads, Toby. BTW, my name is Kenny, and I completely agree with your second paragraph. There is no need to feel irate at my comment regarding having kids. I don't look down upon those who breed. My sister has two small children and I worry about their future very much. The same with my best friend's kids who are now in their teens. I love them all dearly. If I didn't have a smidgen of hope, I guess I wouldn't still be alive, you know? Peace. Sorry to call you a bitch.
