Of newer hard rock/metal, I like stoner rock probably the best. probably because it's very close to '70s rock, particularly Sabbath in some regards. Critics used to say Soundgarden were Zeppelin rip offs, but I think that was probably only because of Chris Cornell, the singer. I think they were much more Sabbath influenced in their music, like the Melvins. Here's a recent favorite from a favorite band - Electric Messiah by High on Fire

AC/DC are one of the greatest rock and roll bands ever, even if they are considered hard rock. That is all.

"Do you like any hard rock/metal bands?" Not really, no. It all seems to take itself so seriously. Do The Dictators count?

Hard rock and metal are two entirely different things.

I tried to think of modern rock but could only come up with The Darkness, so double fail. They are magnificent, though. According to their website: The Darkness; Brooding, magnificent. Like the mighty mother condor sitting upon a rock egg in a nest of curly hair on the side of a powerful mountain.

And does grunge count?

Hard rock and metal are two entirely different things. Two sides of the same coin, in my opinion.

I went through a Metallica phase when I was about 22. I think every white working class music fan in Scotland does something similar. Occasionally when I'm drunk I'll stick on Master of Puppets or Ride The Lightning or Reign In Blood but that's it. It's silly music really. 22 seems a bit late to me, but maybe the age doesn't matter. There were so many musical dead ends in the 80s and 90s, and they seem to have been one of them. What bands of the generation following Metallica are actually any good? This question is only for my own interest. There's no way I'd actually listen to them.
