NY Times opinion section had a very good article on quantifying the slave trade and referenced the site slavevoyage.org The graphic in the link shows how many slave ships went from Africa to the Caribbean and So. I didn't realise that Portugal were the most active of the European nations, but it makes sense with Brazil.

I didn't realise that Portugal were the most active of the European nations, but it makes sense with Brazil. I was surprised at that too and came to the same conclusion. I was watching a show on public TV last week, Finding Your Roots, and the mentioned how pervasive African slavery, besides indigenous, was all over So. America, Central America and Mexico, besides the Caribbean landing places.

I think about 12 million slaves were carried across the Atlantic on Portuguese ships (mostly to Brazil) - I don't know if that tallies with the figures on the website (which looks interesting - thanks for posting).
