the first movie I stood in line to see. the most violent movie I had seen up until that point. One of the first really great movies I saw in a theatre. i think it holds up pretty good. How about you?

It's still a brilliant piece of cinema, in pretty much every way for me. anybody watch that "The Offer" show on Paramount? I'm gonna try and watch some this weekend and see if it hits the spot.

not at that point. maybe "Junior Bonner" later that same year but I wouldn't see "Wild Bunch" for a while yet. the grown-ups treated violent movies like PORNO when I was a kid. I doubt I'd have seen Godfather if the folks had sprung for a babysitter.

I doubt I'd have seen Godfather if the folks had sprung for a babysitter. When I was 8 years old, my family was living in Izmir, Turkey. There wasn't a base there, but there were enough American and British military around that there were places for them to go - schools, churches, stores, a movie theater... I went to the movie theater one night - on my own (different times!) - to see Elvis On Tour. I wasn't an Elvis fan at that point - aside from "Burnin' Love" I really didn't know his music at all - but I'd seen the preview at an earlier trip to the cinema and it looked entertaining. I was standing in line to get in when I spotted a young couple who sometimes babysat me up ahead in the line, so I decided to join them. They informed me that I'd missed Elvis On Tour, that had been the previous night - tonight it was a western, but if I wanted to I could join them for that, so I decided to give it a shot. The western was High Plains Drifter. I'd never seen so much bloodshed in a movie, or heard so much cussing (though in that regard it was really pretty tame - I cussed worse than that). It was shocking, but I enjoyed it. When my parents found out, they were NOT HAPPY with my erstwhile babysitters (though I didn't hear about that 'til years later). I saw the movie again maybe five years ago, and was surprised by how much of it I remembered. It still held up for me. Oh, right - The Godfather does too, sure.

What do you say about it?
Hollywood entertainment combined with European art house flair. Superior to Marvel.
I often revisit moments on Youtube. The scenes in Sicily where Michael falls in love with Apollonia feel like a beautiful dream that we all want to live (also the moment where Michael loses his innocence).
