Have you seen it, and what did you think of it? Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) is a 2021 American documentary film about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, directed by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson in his directorial debut.
The film had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on January 28, 2021 where it won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the documentary categories. It received a limited theatrical release in the United States by Searchlight Pictures on June 25, 2021 before expanding the following weekend and released via streaming on Hulu.
It received acclaim from critics with praise aimed at the footage restoration. It has won numerous awards, including Best Documentary Feature at the 6th Critics' Choice Documentary Awards with a total of a leading and sweeping six awards at that ceremony. It also won Best Documentary at the 75th British Academy Film Awards, Best Documentary Feature at the 94th Academy Awards,[4] and Best Music Film at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.

I liked it
The caliber of playing and showmanship was so high across the board that any of the acts would steal the show in most festival films, but Sly was the king here. I'd love to see what they might have on the previous 2 festivals, as this was the third (?) i believe.

It's great, and exactly what a music doc should be.
I understand and even somewhat relate to the folks who want more performance and less chatter, but I think that either of them separately is an entire movie, and I think the ratio is just about right for public showings. Wouldn't want to skimp any more on either.
Looking forward to the DVD which will hopefully have more of both.

Yes, thirded.
Did you guys notice the full list of performers over the 6 weeks, it was so killer! Of course, they naturally focused on the biggest names for the 2-hour feature, but hot damn there were some fab artists that didn't get a mention at all let alone screen time - Cal Tjader, Chuck Jackson, Roy Ayers, Larry Willis, Don Alias, Sonny Fortune, Pigmeat Markham!
Hope they do a full-on treatment with all the artists.

Hey, who was the guy with Stevie Wonder right at the end after the credits?
Him and Stevie have this short little verbal stoush about the guy's clothes, and i can't tell if they're just play acting or if the guy is really pissed off.

Oh cheers, jimmy. Were they playing or did they sometimes have a fractitious relationship, any idea?
