I was just reminded that today (it's still the 22nd here) was the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of my heroes, Charles Mingus. I considered marking the occasion by changing my board name to Charlie M., but decided against it.
Coincidentally - or was it? - I listened to Mingus quite a bit today. There's two new releases - a previously-unissued live document from London in 1972, and a reissue of his only trio album as a leader Mingus Three (from 1957) with alternative takes and outtakes - all fine stuff (though I wouldn't recommend the '72 set for newbies).
Any other fans? Let's hear from you.

Oh yeah, i've proclaimed my Mingus love many times. So many fantastic sessions to choose from.
I might put on Black Saint... this arvo, and revel in its brilliance.

I wished him a happy birthday on the Jazz Corner.
He's great.
His compositions surpassed his hero Ellington (my opinion) and his music stands up even today....also a great player both on bass and piano.
His autobiography is unreadable.

What's the package like, Charlie, and the sound? It was available as a hi-res download a week ahead of RSD, and that's what I got. The download does come with a pdf booklet, which is really cool, but beyond that I don't know about packaging. The sound is terrific.

I struggle a bit with Mingus. Hard to know why.

I struggle a bit with Mingus. Hard to know why. So do I.
But more surprising in your case, I guess, because you are a musician.

I will around to really listening, and immersing myself in some of his stuff I got a good deal on the ‘Passions of a Man’ boxset a while ago, which I reckoned would be the make or break Mingus proposition

In my 20's I had little or no time for jazz but I still liked Mingus. His music is theatrical and cinematic, less abstract but no less sophisticated. Its incredible that he could straddle those two places, make music that's accessible but still command respect with his contemporaries.
The book was unreadable, long rambling conversations with no direction but maybe I should try it again, its been about twenty years. Also a fine piano player and his "Mingus Plays Piano" LP is a beautifully low-key way to hear him.
