One of my favorite albums is A Modern Jazz Symposium Of Music And Poetry With Charles Mingus (recorded 1957, released 1959). I wonder if the title was Mingus's, because although there is one long track with a spoken narrative, there's no poetry as such.
This is that track (the narrative was written by Lonne Elder with uncredited assistance from Langston Hughes, and performed by actor Mel Stewart). Not for everyone, I'm sure, but I love it. (Geek note: the mono and stereo versions of the album used different takes of this track. I prefer the mono take, though maybe only because that's the one I got to know first.)
