Worth a thread. There's a lot of great stuff on YT.
The story behind this clip: An item fell through. Filler was needed for a live show. The producer went to the BBC bar and saw several comedy writers having a booze up and dragged them to the studio to talk ad hoc on their profession. One - John Antrobus - was deemed too pissed and ejected at the start.

Semi-legendary.
I wonder if anyone would come down on the side of Muggeridge today?

Oh, all the way legendary!
Cleese later said that he pulled a lot of his punches because he actually started feeling sorry for Muggeridge and Stockwood - they were woefully under-prepared, over-confident, and so not reading the room.

I didn't think Paul Jones was that good.

Matthau's joke at around 12:00 is pretty good.
Funny Carson makes a big deal about Lemmon as an actor - I sometimes think Matthau is better. It just looks like he's breathing. ONE HELLUVA GUY

Christ, I'd've walked off, too. I've never watched that show, but I remember seeing her guest hosting Carson's show and her interviewing technique seems more about her than her guest. Quite annoying.

She'd have said that it was her 'schtick' and nobody took offence - but that's obviously seriously nasty shit and Rivers doesn't come out of it well at all.
Not the first time I've thought that either. She was a funny cup of tea was Joan Rivers.

It's like she's trying to be her version of Dame Edna but minus all the charm, wit and likeability of Humphries you so just end up with this bitter nastiness. A cheap hatch it job that comes across as cruel and personal.

ONE HELLUVA GUYI think the Criterion Collection of "Hopscotch" has an interview with director Ronald Neame. "Hopscotch" is one of THIS Walter Matthau fan's favorites and RN's brief interview was pretty delightful.
he said the character's love of Mozart was inspired by Mattahu's own habit of humming his favorite pieces. RN discusses his efforts to calm Jewish Matthau's discomfort at having to play a scene in an actual German Beer Garden during Octoberfest.
WM made a pretty good Michael Ritchie movie with Robin Williams in the 80's. there's a "behind the scenes" promo thing where they interview many involved about making the movie. Everyone who mentions Robin Williams also mentions that he's a genius. Eventually they get to Matthau. he is asked about RW. "Robin Willliams?" he says and then, his voice absolutely dripping with sarcasm "oh, he's a genius!"
LOL. I love that guy.
