I know it's not cool but I quite liked Avatar 2. It's slight, cliched and cheesy but it's very well done and old fashioned in a pleasing way. I found it amusing that people were predicting it was going to bomb and it's heading towards 2 billion worldwide.
I quite liked the Elvis movie too even though I don't like Luhrmann as a director. His style actually worked quite well here. It's flawed but sincere and moving by the end. I wouldn't be surprised if the fella won the oscar for best actor because it's the kind of thing they will dig.
Top Gun 2 was actually enjoyable despite me not being a fan of the original. Cruise always seems to deliver these days, it's very well done and it has a physicality and a crowd pleasing element that I appreciated. Its success tells you something.

Cruise is a legend. The last action hero. The last movie star. His commitment is total. His appreciation of the fans sincere. He breaks bones just to entertain YOU. I bet he's hung like a goddamn shire horse. Let's hear it for Tom Cruise!

I'm pretty neutral about him. I disliked him when he first emerged with his cheesy grin and gung-ho Americanisms, he was like a one man frat party. I became more interested in him in the 90s when he took on more complex roles (Born On The Fourth.., Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut etc.) and utilised a surprising, and hitherto unseen, darkness. Since then he has retreated back into action blockbusters and is consequently of lesser interest to me, but he's good at what he does.

The Mission Impossible films are the best Hollywood popcorn movies of the last 20+ years.
And Cruise gives it 110%. The stunts are insane and he is committed to entertaining people. I respect that.

Some of the '80s movies are classics in my opinion: 'The Outsiders', 'All the Right Moves', 'The Color of Money', 'Rain Man'. No one can honestly deny he's had a stellar career.

Nobody cares though do they? I mean the public has turned off them. Viewing figures are significantly down.

Whatever. I'll be cheering them on. For a film that wildly creative and original to get such a large number of nominations is good going.
Shame there's not much else there, really.

I've seen a lot of the shorts. The following are pretty great:
Stranger at the Gate (*doc) The Flying Sailor My Year of Dicks (*animated) Le Pupille (*live action)
And the following really good:
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse Ice Merchants The Martha Mitchell Effect The Elephant Whisperers Night Ride
Asterisk by my predicted winners, though the above is everything I've seen so far.
Also think Pinocchio should be an easy win in feature length animation. Not much competition, that I can see.
