Created one of my favourite characters on TV in the sardonic, anti-establishment, conspiracy-mongering detective John Munch in Homicide: Life on the Streets and kept him going through other cop shows, notably SVU: and apparently lived it IRL. RIP

While I'm generally not in favor of reneging on promises, Lorne was absolutely right about Belzer not being ready for the Not Ready For Prime Time Players. He was edgier (for better and for worse) than any of those guys. I had an affection for him, though. I was astonished when he actually became a successful actor (successful for an astonishingly long time, as it turned out) on network television. More recently, he had a series of interviews that he did for a YouTube channel. All of the ones I've watched (Gilbert Gottfried, Alan Zweibel, Dick Cavett, a great long-ish one with Jerry Lewis, even Paul Schaffer) have been really entertaining/interesting. Richard Belzer's ConversationR.I.P., motherfucker.

His performances in The Groove Tube are sublimely dark/hilarious.
