Let's face it lads, the 50s, 60s and 70s were pretty predictable all in all. There's not much difference between the lists and a staid yet respectable music mag is there? I mean, maybe a poncey mag like Pitchfork might have OS MUTANTES in the 60s for example. The 80s and 90s will be much more interesting as all of our tastes will begin to diverge a bit more. I mean, I'll be having Italo, House and Techno pretty much, DF will be heaving NEUBAUTEN in there, Coan will predictably be spaffing Fall tracks off left, right and centre etc. The idea isn't to parade our obscure tastes though. As I said right at the beginning of this we have the cups for that. I'm having to be extra careful with my picks now because I know I'm only one of three or four people who will pick something "obvious".

The 1980 selection looks like Q magazine if I'm honest. you're a massive snob.

Every single participant has picked something that's 'obvious' to someone. I'm just saying it gets more diffused the later it gets.

Did I comment at all that they weren't very good? We are a small board and our tastes, ultimately, are very similar in those years because we are all quite similar in age with some outliers. As I said, the 80s and 90s will be the interesting years in terms of more individualistic and personal selections.

Of course. But what is termed "the best" inevitably becomes much more open to interpretation in the 1980s and 1990s. I suspect most of us would agree that rock music entered choppy waters in these decades, whilst other forms such as soul became much more saccharine as well.
