I'm going to be doing a series of threads on each year when we finally finish. I'll be interested what people feel about the early 80s selections here, but they come across as quite peculiar lists with too many head scratchers.

Well at least three of those 1981 selections (not including my own here) are absolute solid gold nailed-on classics, but at least half the others are real WTF choices. I honestly don't know what people are playing at

The later it gets, the more 'personal' choices you're going to get. Music starts to break down into factions and genres in the 70s, but it really gets ingrained by about the mid-80s.
Thing is, on lots of other boards you'd have all U2 and REM, and I don't think that's going to happen here. I think that's a good thing.
Wait'll you see what I have in store for the 90s!

Why what? Why won't we have all U2 and REM? Because we have better taste than that.
We're music fans, not mainstream music fans. We have strong opinions about things. There is some degree of balance that would be nice - it's why I'm not filling my 80s with obscure folk bands, though I might personally prefer that stuff to what you find on most critics lists - but it gets harder and harder to be objective when the 'earthshaking' stuff and commercially huge stuff is in totally separate realms. I suspect many of us will agree that they were a lot closer together from '65 to '75 than they were the ten years after that...

I will be picking one U2 song in the 80s at least.
I might pick an REM tune as well. They'll certainly be superior to some of the recent picks at least.

Let's face it lads, the 50s, 60s and 70s were pretty predictable all in all. There's not much difference between the lists and a staid yet respectable music mag is there? I mean, maybe a poncey mag like Pitchfork might have OS MUTANTES in the 60s for example.
The 80s and 90s will be much more interesting as all of our tastes will begin to diverge a bit more. I mean, I'll be having Italo, House and Techno pretty much, DF will be heaving NEUBAUTEN in there, Coan will predictably be spaffing Fall tracks off left, right and centre etc.

The 1980 selection looks like Q magazine if I'm honest.

I can't wait for 1985 and 1986, which seemed, when talked about on BCB, to be truly desolate years for many.
