Sometimes band have One Song and for Simply Red it’s Holding Back The Years. It’s classy, confident and he Can sing. Some would say it’s a great song and I wouldn’t go that far but it definitely has quite a bit going for it.
The Genesis one is good too and pretty straightforward for them. The Gabriel silliness is on the right side of charming and you can easily sing along to it.
Maybe I’ll start a Genesis thread.
I voted Simple Red.

With you on the Simply Red -as you say it's the vocal that makes it. But I find the Genesis track pretty dreary. It's the track that people always try and use to convert people to prog Genesis, like "...but they can write good songs too..", but for me it's a just a dull tune.

I have a soft spot for the SR album, even if i never need to hear it again. As Goaty says, it's got a lot going for it, 'HBTY', a classic ballad delivered strongly - hit.
This is not my favoured Genesis record or sound, so i seldom feel the urge to play it, but i like it ok. It's got a bit of melody and depth, a bit of 70s prog aural wallpaper.
Mick the Fanta-pants for the win.

For the record, this is my go-to type of Genesis song...

That Genesis song (IKWIL) is DEEPLY obnoxious. It has a confidence that baffles - "THAT? You're smug about THAT?"
Simply Red...I went in thinking I might enjoy it (KNOWING that it really goes on for a small eternity), but...maybe I just don't enjoy his (technically quite impressive) voice.

Mine is the sole vote (so far?) for the Genesis track. The lyrics don’t make much of an impression on me, whether for better or worse, but the tune is darn catchy. As for Mr. Loveless’ criticism, is prog without smugness still prog?
I remember when the Simply Red tune came out; I was listening a lot then to a radio station that played mostly soul oldies but would sprinkle in a few new tunes here and there, and they LOVED this. I certainly found Mick’s voice arresting… at first. But there’s not much to the actual song, and without an arresting song Mick’s mannerisms start getting old ‘long about the halfway point.

I like 'em both. Wouldn't take my socks off for either but wouldn't pass them by on the street either.
Simply Red's tune is a little sweeter.
