Shouldn't this be binned? A bit harsh, I like some of the tracks posted so far... Interesting edit..Might have applied to some of the previous years..

1986
Contrary to 1985 where I struggled for a pick, 1986 couldn't really be more obvious for me. Every single thing about this track is absolutely goddamn perfect; from the opening recordings of crickets in Chichen Itza, the dog barking in the background, to the echoing strings and beautifully delivered poetry of the lyrics. Contender for greatest song of all time.

From adam: as with the playn jayn, i need to SHOE-HORN the prisoners in somehow. such an important band for me. i'm not sure that the 'in from cold' album is their best, but it was their tilt at success and released on my and G's old pal eddie piller's countdown label before he founded acid jazz. incidentally, there's a paragraph in his book about how he turned G away from the blue note in hoxton for being a scruff. anyway, the band hated the album because of its slick production, but i think it's aged quite well. this is my favourite track from it.

1986 is the first year I can think of absolutely nothing I'm compelled to put forth.
For me it was the year I embraced the mainstream. None of that stuff has dated that well, but I can think of a few albums I loved at the time, so let's see if anyone has a stronger urge than I...

Someone needs to pick that!

Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
Finding real faves of mine in the mid 80s has been a bit challenging, but this falls right into the cathegory.

1986
Run DMC and Aerosmith-"Walk This Way"
So....1986, a pretty terrible year for music by anyone's estimation. I was initially gonna go for Big Black, The Butthole Surfers or some other Peel/NME approved racket, but ultimately I have to go for this, because as clunky as it sounds now, it was a MASSIVELY important record for me and many others, in that it was a way in to a new world. Stuff like 'Rapper's Delight' or 'White Lines' before this had been quite entertaining, but it wasn't my world.
Although I'm a pretty big Aerosmith fan these days, at this point, I knew virtually nothing about them and even now, the original WTW doesn't do a lot for me, but coupled with the beats and delivery of Run DMC, it becomes something else. The sweetening of hip hop with guitars by this lot and the Beastie Boys helped to attune my sensibilities to hip hop and it became a genuinely exciting journey.
Within a year, I'd explored all the Def Jam recordings I could, courtesy of the local record library, and the best was yet to come. The discovery of Public Enemy a year or so later was life changing.

1987
I mentioned in my 1986 entry that it was a golden period for Hip-Hop, well now's the time to prove it. Eric B and Rakim put out a series of releases that really excited me back then. Their choice of beats and the way their productions stripped everything down and pushed the bass to the fore was thrilling. They could take a record, from Bobby Byrd or James Brown say, and take it somewhere entirely new. But most of all it was the style of Rakim's rapping that I liked: laid back but utterly confident and self assured. He sounded like the coolest guy in the world.

Sonic Youth - Catholic Block
I have struggled to find stuff for the mid 80s that I could feel really confortable with. Luckily that is over for the following few years. This is a good example of what I feel as a new rock golden era.
(there are 4-5 different tracks I could happily choose from the same album)

Lots of great house and techno in 87, but I'm going for Raw by Big Daddy Kane. Listening to rap from the past few years with it's autotuned sing songy mumbling and shitty trap beats, I sometimes have to remind myself how much I used to love it. This was all over New York in 87. The video says 1988, but it's definitely from 87.
