The first and best song on the best album from the best group of the decade, the mightily cinematic MERCURY REV. A wondrous production with some thrilling flute (a word combo I would utter in no other context) by Susan and all-round top level skronking racket by the guys. A track full of hope and joy, something for everyone. Turn it up Mercury Rev - Empire State

1986SWING OUT SISTER - "Breakout" I had another seven contenders for this year (not an amazing year, but...some triumphs across my own spectrum of tastes), but...none felt as bold as this...I don't know...what are the words I'm looking for "frothy", "frivolous", "sunny", "brassy"...and, my God, this may be the best music video of all time. That's funny. Those are the same adjectives I use to describe you to people.

1986 Walk in the Woods - Peter Case I included a couple Peter Case and Rodney Crowell songs on a mix CD for a friend. He didn't like them - too polemical, he said. I have mentioned this before, but I saw Case open for Crowded House at a pretty small club on Columbus in North Beach in San Francisco. Just him and a bongo player. It was so good, I dragged someone else the next night. I always liked the Plimsouls, but this was a real brave departure from that considering they were on the brink of bigger popularity.

For me, there were two albums from this year that stood out as pure classics. SY's Evol and the Fugs' crowning glory, No More Slavery.
As Osgood chose one of my favourite tracks from the former, I'll have to go with something from the latter, but it's such a genre-diverse collection of fine tracks that picking one is a problem, so imma cheat bit and choose the second track, which is a seven-part suite of very different songs around the same theme, showing off the group's writing and vocalising skills. The second part, a song about Emily Dickenson, is pretty much the apotheosis of the intersection of Beat poetry and pop music.

Everyone probably knows, if they've been paying any attention, how much I love Shimmy Disc, Kramer and Bongwater, but I haven't managed to shoehorn any of their stuff in, so this time I'm going to ignore the claims of the Pet Shop Boys' Go West or tracks from YLT's Painful in favour of the band Kramer formed after Bongwater broke up because the lyricist/vocalist (and Kramer's erstwhile lover) Ann Magnuson left to, ahem, further her career break-up. Captain Howdy is basically Kramer on all instruments and Penn Jillette (him out of Pennn & Teller) as lyricist/vocalist. Although they went on to make a couple of albums, they debuted with a single that featured on the B-side a remarkable pastiche of Magnusson's narrative, free-associative style in a story about his (PJ's) experiences in Vegas. It won't be to everyone's taste - indeed, maybe no-one's - but just in case someone might like it, here it is in all it's perverse glory, complete with Kramer coming in at the end with a kiss-off.

No explanations. It's just a great piece of stoner/desert rock, with a fine riff and intro, guitars run through bass amps, and some of the best playing that Josh Homme put his name to.

Had to leave out the KLF. Updated on the new canon participation w/ songs thread..You could make that KLF track your wild card selection, if so inclined. Good track. Shame to lose it..
