I watched that Call Me by Your Name last night. It came out in 2017 and won a lot of praise. Gay coming of age drama, sensitively done with a good performance from the young fella who was in Dune but by the end I was like, "not bad". It happens a lot these days.
Surprise me with something new and great....

Surprise me with something new and great.... It doesn't happen often to me these days sadly. But I did really love this film: I think part of the reason I liked it so much was that I hadn't heard anything about it, so it came as a lovely surprise ( you can just relate to the film on your own terms without all the baggage of expectation). I did write review somewhere when I outlined why I thought it was such a great film, but I'm damned if I can find it now. I must watch it again to see if it stands up so well a second time.

the last one that really knocked me out was "Triangle of Sadness" I just got around to it a few months back. I hadn't really heard much about it aside from it winning some stuff.
I think I mentioned in the now viewing thread how "the menu" reminded me of La Grande Bouffe or something like that. "triangle.." even moreso. I liked both but "Triangle of Sadness" is every bit as on the nose but I think the point was driven home far more effectively. Am I going to bang you on the head with a rock or am I going to let you give me a job? LOL. I really need to watch that one again. i'm sure a second viewing will bang the nails in the "feminist" angle a bit more.

I've actually seen quite a few that I've really enjoyed over the last few years. Sometimes - and I know this is heresy to some people - I think very generally speaking I prefer the acclaimed films of the last few years to the ones people rave about from the last few decades. The one I saw most recently that really knocked me out was this: there's some really touching moments, wonderful naturalistic performances (especially the central character), but also some small, dare I say 'quirky' directorial touches which add to the magic. I was really drawn in to the whole thing, there's a sweet, melancholy mood throughout which fills your heart. So much so that I watched the other Trier films in the trilogy (they're almost as good). It deserved all the awards it got, as far as I'm concerned. So - yeah, I wouldn't hesitate to call that one great. And that was 2021. Since then....not sure I'd call Everything Everywhere All At Once great, although I really enjoyed it. Seeing it a second time around kind of took something away from it (same thing happened with Licorice Pizza, another very recent film I liked a lot). The silliness is not an ingredient in 'great', right? You want sombre shit with a message. I dunno, maybe it IS great. It certainly seems there's something close to a consensus around EEAAO - nearly everybody I know who saw it, loved it. So there's three from the last couple of years. There's probably another three I could name - I might come back to this.

This thread is bugging me. I’m realizing that there hasn’t been one in a long time.
Part of that is that I’m just not watching many new films. But when I do (when something really catches my eye), I’ve tended to find them pretty disappointing.
At some point, I assume SOME film will spring to mind.

The Hand of God (2021). An unexpected joy… visually, emotionally and philosophically.

Give the film I mentioned a go T when you can. I think it will be up your street .

The last one that really stuck in my head was Phantom Thread I think. You know the way a great film does where it can haunt you for a couple of days afterwards and your process it?
