One for Dayo: Aussie band NO, led by Ollie Olsen, with 'Done No Wrong'... Kinda unsuccessfully apes The Boys Next Door, a band Ollie Olsen shared bills with early on and had an association with (Roland Howard playing with him in the Young Charlatans)..The song starts out promising, but never seems to quite take off..Think he did a better job with the previous band, Whirlywirld, which was a bit more minimalist..

I really liked the opening where I thought it was going to head into a Nobukazu Takemura type thing, circa Icefall. Then it's a bit Broadcast with gitchy things. It's an interesting thing for sure, not sure on some of the synth sounds in the background, but yeah, I quite like that overall.

Just quoting to tag neige in, as this is for he: Here's something that I considered for the BCB Cup (if that's not warning enough):

That's quite a trip. The intro doesn't indicate at all what comes later, it's sprawling, full of twists and turns, with loads of surprising notes and harmonies. I really enjoyed that a lot!
Edit: "Japanese chamber pop orchestra" (courtesy of Popmatters.com) sums it up nicely. I'll investigate
Not really sure who the best candidate for this track might be, I guess fange for its jazziness.

Thanks Felix, i like it a lot musically. It has an understated but strong groove, and the mix of horns and brass creates a really interesting sound. His vocals are maybe a bit of a weak point, and as i don't understand what he is singing i just have to focus on his voice, but don't detract from my enjoyment of the tune. Cheers!

Le Rex are a fabulous outfit, very muscular and funky in its own way, and their one-off collaboration with quirky songwriter King Pepe was a highlight of Swiss music of the last 10 years, in my book. He's certainly not a great vocalist, granted!

That started much more awkwardly then I expected, a difficult listen, but really hits something when into its stride. Jackie's section in particular is really urban sounding, he's playing that hard, and it sounds like the sax is echoing off concrete. Has a real cinematic quality like it should be backing one of those early 70s hard hitting cop flicks. Going to have to remember to check the rest out.

I know this wasn't the original point of the thread, but I wonder what would happen if we picked something to challenge, rather than to please. I know I was tempted. Just a thought, though.

Struggling to pick a follow on... As the person who started this thread, I have to say I didn't expect the thread to move as quickly as its doing. It's good it's taken off, but it's like a fast game of ping pong, going back and forth, while I thought it would be more like a leisurely round of golf! I guess what I'm saying is don't feel obliged to come up with something right away, take a few days or longer if you want..go at your own pace.

As a newbie here and a rare contributor on other threads (like the canon I gave up on post-1966) I'm not really au fait with what everyone loves in particular. I love the idea of picking any name and looking forward to reading the comment.
