So anyway, regarding he with the unfortunate last name...
Not an unfamiliar track to me, though I've always enjoyed the one-off/perfect timing aspect of it. Part of me wonders why it enjoys such a legendary reputation, but such was the magic of 1973 - not coincidentally the year I started listening to/noticing pop music. A very, very minor hit in the US, as you probably know, but it's got enough glamarockatheaterspectacle to capture ones attention even when there was a lot of all of that going on. Maybe because it does so much at once? I mean, maybe there's even a little marginal proginess there too? The sound of '73- all of it - in one neat little package. Nicely done, ya Pratt. He's still around, ya know. Maybe I'll even check out what he's done in the years since. Nah, maybe not...
Anyway, it started me thinking about that year and little preteen me discovering music for the first time. So I went to a random Billboard chart from 1973 chart and picked something in the lower reaches that I remember being impressed with at the time. And I came up with this, a rare soft ballad from the Bay Area funksters. If you told me at the time that this was a mostly white band, I'm not sure I'd have believed you.

I do have a Tower of Power album somewhere, but have never paid it much attention. This has a great full arrangement and I really like the vocal. It's flirting with the MOR side of soul I guess, but stays on the right side of the line. Quite reminiscent of Al Green's stuff at the time. This one's all about the sound for me and I enjoyed it a lot. nice one Dave!
One for Toby next. It might take him a little time to get round to it, but that's okay.

The year of my birth. A well-chosen number G - the wooden snares echoing Axelrod, oscillating didgeidoo style synth, short horn stabs and Rhodes keys are all things l like. If I was a rare groove DJ, I would be hunting this down, which I believe was something of a rare gem until a reissue in recent years. It's probably made all the more interesting by the fact that it was probably made by men with slightly strange glasses and weird facial hair arrangements in somewhere like Ghent or Ostend - that peculiar part of the world called Belgium. A place where Marvin Gaye himself would retreat to in the late seventies, ostensibly (sic) to recover from drug addiction.
I'll admit that I enjoyed the track - a good choice for my sensibilities - but I was not hugely enamoured to seek out the rest of the album. I think that's more about me than the music - my tastes are changing.

I've given this quite a few plays and I like it a lot. I'm a sucker for those Bacharach style arrangements, so that alone won me over. I was reading a bit about him and apparently he played and made records with a strong Brazilian influence, so this a guy I'm definitely going to explore more of. Lovely sunny vibe to this track.
As Neige also liked the one above, I thought I might try him with a track that has a very similar vibe and is an obscure favourite of mine. Thanks JSJ! Joe & Bing - Daybreak

My ears may fail me, but I hear real strings and a mellotron.
I had a look over at Discogs and was amazed by the history of the album: a Brazilian release under the name Best of Friends, then an almost hand-made repress as Joe and Bing only sold at concerts in 1971, then a couple of reissues (Brazil/Italy) trying to capitalize on band member Eumir Deodato's sudden fame in 1976, and finally a Rev-Ola remaster with bonus tracks in 2004

Not bad, Felix, not bad! Pretty good song. I like the guitar part. Good voice. I feel like the drummer is maybe overdoing the ghost notes - like HE thinks he's pushing the song along, but he's really just cluttering it up. The keyboardist, too, sometimes. I'm nitpicking. I can't help that. I do it with songs I really love, too.
I'll find a song to post to someone - give me a bit...
