There are a few duds, but it's one of her best - very definitely worth checking out. I think it's her only album of all-original material.

Let's see what Cupmaster Fange thinks of this (jeez, I hope it wasn't in the cup):

Oh, that's great, Charlie, cheers! Right up my pop-rock alley! Love the chunky guitars, and that organ is pure fangenip. I wonder why they pushed the lead vocal SO far into the right channel? It deserves to be front and centre, for mine, really launch the tune even more, as it has plenty of hooks and power to back it up.
I keep thinking I must look deeper into the Shondells' catalogue; if they have stuff like this in the cracks should be well worth it.

Ok, this one is for fishy, but i reckon there may be a few who like Stereolab and Broadcast who dig it too -
Tom Dissevelt & Kid Baltan - 'Syncopation (Alternate Version)'

Ok, this one is for fishy, but i reckon there may be a few who like Stereolab and Broadcast who dig it too - Tom Dissevelt & Kid Baltan - 'Syncopation (Alternate Version)' In all the comps of early electronics pioneers, I've never come across the names of Tom Dissevelt or Kid Baltan before. This is very much on the listenable side of the coin, there's a Raymond Scott burbling playfulness about it. I love the way it ends on that warm tone. It's a strange beast; half Delia Derbyshire, half Wallace and Gromit theme music. I'd be interested in hearing that album, I have to say, have the Dutch been overlooked?

I don't want to throw one straight back at fange, (I had a different track in mind), so I'll opt for Jimmy on this one. Not sure if it's his kinda thing. Closing track from my favourite album of the year, Sealionwoman' Nothing Will Grow in the Soil. They call themselves "doom jazz", but there's a lot of Brit folk/folk-horror in here, too. Just vocals, double-bass, and drones.

Fuck, Jimmy, I honestly don't know what to make of that. Mad drum intro, then something that sounds like sped-up MOR with some frantic guitar squealing, then a pisstaking pub singer bursts in doing his Steely Dan bit. But the rhythm lurches all over the shop. The video doesn't help. I can't get a handle on it at all. It's a bit like Bobby Conn or Ariel Pink, one of those dudes, you don't know what they're doing, what they're aiming for, all kinds of influences mixed up but it's not like they create something new and exciting, they don't even work together well. It's kind of a mess. Real 21st century art, I suppose.
I need to listen again later. It's pissing me off at the same time as fascinating me. Well, maybe 'fascinating' is a bit strong....but it's definitely interesting.
Sure I'll now find out they're all Oxford graduates whose fathers work for the government or something and I'll throw the fucking thing in the bin for good.
I'll think of a track for someone else later, once I've given this another go.
