LOVE IT! I grew up with a lot of "novelty records" but that one didn't enter my life until Dr. Demento was hitting his stride in the seventies.

I have a minor gift as a mimick but Jim Backus, no matter how hard I try, will always be one of the many that got away.

Jubilation - Paul Anka

I think I can probably only enjoy that on a kitsch level - it's pretty white sounding for something so clearly influenced by black gospel - though I guess it's to Paulie's credit that the structure of the actual song is all there. But it did lead me to the Edwin Hawkins Singers version, which is great - so I'm grateful for that. Soul in place of bombast. Just goes to show you how much of the impression music leaves is based on performance. Nothing wrong with the song at all. Just needed an appropriate arrangement to bring it off. There are probably other versions as well, so maybe it's one of those things where the original is the worst rather than the best.

Anyways, the loss of a few power pop legends lately made me think of the genre as a whole. There's still, in little towns all across America, kids discovering their grandparents' music, and coming up with their cute little Merseybeat soundalikes. 99.9% of them, of course, just ain't got the songs, so this is probably the opposite problem of the above. Listen to any recent comp and you'll learn to appreciate Mr. Anka.

Anyway, I digress. This is from a 1979 album by the Searchers, and it's a) a power-pop gem - Beatle harmonies and chimy guitars and all that done right, and b) it's a song co-written by another hero-to-the-popsters who passed away recently, John Wicks - by all accounts a lovely guy.

How does this one hold up? Let's ask Sneelock!

Power Pop? sounds more like those "I Would Walk 500 Miles" guys to me.
Consider the source - Power Pop-wise I'm the guy who likes most of the songs everybody else got good and sick of.
I don't MIND it but it doesn't get stuck to the roof of my mouth, youknowwhati'msayin'?

catchy can be both a good AND a bad thing with pop music. this one doesn't quite register enough to be good OR bad.

(Belated:) I had no idea that Recess Monkeys song was a cover! Neither of those Chiliwack songs sounded (otherwise) familiar to me. Which doesn't necessarily mean I never heard them before.
