I love the sound of this and of course the gospelly vocal (reminds of Marsh Hunt). It's very much got a Whitfield feel on the production. I had heard the name, but don't know much on the band, though I feel I should.

Named for Maxayn Lewis, a beautiful singer with an incredible career. Really worth checking out her early-70s records.

Ah, Danny O'Keefe. Best-known, of course, for "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues." But this is a street-level narrative, very like Rodriguez, complete with backing choirs and orchestrations. Like Rodriguez, he has a very pleasant voice, and he doesn't hector, just does a sort of cinema verite in narrative. I'm going to try something that most people here will probably hate. In light of the huge success of guys with cowboy hats, boots, and names like Jason or Tim, I'm turning to a piece of commercial country from the 90s (the period of biggest commercial success for country music in general) that I like a great deal. Not sure if Davey will like it, but I at least know he'll give it a fair listen, so might as well direct it at him. (Yes, it's the "Wildfire" guy. This is from a series of three records (cleverly titled "Cowboy Songs I, II, & III") that are a blend of traditional songs, covers, and the occasional original like this one.)

G should have sent that Danny O’Keefe track to me. He’s a personal hero of mine (so much so, that I was just deep-diving a bunch of his records and videos three days ago). That song in particular is a bit of an outlier in his oeuvre. A little more ambitious as a production. Not emblematic of his best qualities, but pretty great on its own terms.

As for the Murphy track - I really like him as an artist, and I love those Cowboy Songs records as a concept. I only wish that the production on them was as humble and clear as his delivery. The particular song is a case-in-point. It’s a very good record, but it would be even better if they just recorded him singing that great song solo acoustic, or with a pedal steel ala a Nesmith record.

For the first half-minute or so, I was thinking I'm liking everything about this except the song. Then I started liking the song (the chicken reference was the turning point). In the end I liked everything about it except the way he sang the title line.

There's something, or perhaps a number of things, Vintage Violence-ish about this. I will definitely investigate further at some point. Thanks for the turn-on, Davey!

Of course I was well inwith the Primitives in their late ’80s heyday, but I wasn't aware of their reincarnation this century. On this track at least, their sound is very different. Tracy's voice, which was always their USP, has hardly changed, but the tempo and the clattering arrangement was not as engaging as the Ramonish punkery of their youthful singles. I listened to it twice, but just couldn't get into it, sorry.

And "Geronimo's Cadillac!" And "Carolina in the Pines." Guy's had a pretty interesting career. His biggest hit is probably my least favorite thing by him.
