I've only seen him in Glengarry Glen Ross and Little Miss Sunshine (I think). He was fantastic in both THO

He was great in Catch-22. A class act.

He reminds me a bit of Larry David - a similar kind of dry humour, an obvious intellect, the way he talks, even, to some extent.

Ah, too bad. I always enjoyed watching him.
This is the first thing that comes to mind whenever I think of him:

The In-Laws is a Top 20 flick for me. Arkin was always delightful, even in movies that didn't deserve him (except for Inspector Clouseau, but I couldn't hold that one against him). RIP.

He was a favourite of mine. Always memorable in everything. As mentioned, he made a great Yossarrian, even if the adaptation was a bit hit and miss. Not mentioned yet but a big influence on me was his performance in Wait Until Dark. I'd strongly recommend that one for those who haven't seen it. I loved his look in it and it was quite a strong fashion influence on me back in the day. RIP.

He was pretty much the ONLY good thing about Little Miss Sunshine. Carrell wasn't bad, I guess, but he seemed to be the only person who got that the only way to play it was completely over-the-top. God, I hated that movie. But I digress...
In any case, contrast it with his understated performance in GGS, and it's clear what made him so great. Know when to stick out and when not to.

An absolute favorite. Simon was really important to me (my oldest friend and I saw it together as kids. We quoted it almost weekly until he passed away last month). The In Laws might be my favorite comedy. Pretty much everything Arkin did was gold.
But this one is the performance of his career…

Got a really vague memory of seeing him as this mentally handicapped guy and thinking he was really good in it. Can't remember the name of the film though, anyone...?
