What's your general opinion on him? His place amongst great actors (serious/action stars/etc). Do you ever feel sorry for him? like he's stuck in this persona and situation that he can't escape from? Is he last great old skool film superstar?
Any other views on different topics about him?

Brilliant Movie Star. He's a better actor than the roles he plays.

I heard the other day he lives in Downe, Kent, not that far from my mum. I find it a bit hard to believe, but who knows?

I don't think much of him as an actor but I do think he has movie star chops and that's no small thing. I like him best in no brainer sorts of things - he can bring more to those roles than is required. whenever he steps outside that box I think he's in over his head. like in "magnolia" or that Michael Mann movie where he plays a hitman. he does have a certain amount of gravitas but I think those things come off like "look, Mom! I'm acting". As long as he's making life or death decisions and jumping off of things I like him very much.

He IS the last superstar. It feels like the whole of Hollywood is somehow now riding on his shoulders. He's great at being Tom Cruise. All those mad stunts and running around a lot. The Mission Impossible series is great pop corn entertainment and I heartily approve.
Is he is a great actor? No but he's done some very good things that shows he has range. I thought he was terrific in Magnolia but now he appears settled into the running around and doing mad stunts thing. I'm ok with that. I think he respects the fans and wants to entertain us with his crazy stunts and Hollywood grin.
I will be seeing the new Mission Impossible film next week and no doubt marvelling at some bat shit stunt the ageing, crazy, scientologist bastard has done. I've heard in this one he gets blasted into space on the top of a rocket and ends up sky diving back to earth wearing nothing but a crash helmet and a pair of bermuda shorts. Some guy is Tom!

I've never seen him in a film, which, by some of the comments above, may be considered my loss, but I have seen him bouncing on sofas, and heard conflicting rumours about his sexuality. But none of that matters, though, because Scientologist

He’s a pretty good actor in the way EVERY professional actor in modern times is a pretty good actor. Let’s call him ‘league average.’ But you can always see him acting.
I don’t particularly like the kind of big budget action things he does these days, so it’s been a while since I’ve seen him in anything. In fact, I just went to his filmography and it appears the last movie I actually saw of his was 2008’s Tropic Thunder.
Maybe he’s become great since then.

Closeted asshat cult member, with zero acting range. Have only liked one of his films and that was because he died several times in it...

What's your general opinion on him? If forced to have an opinion on the guy I guess I would say he's somewhat better than Kevin Costner.

I think he's a good actor who has quite a lot of range. But in the last 15 years or so, he's given up on being an actor of range and concentrated on being a bloody good action hero, which he is. It may not be your kind of film, it's not mine largely (although I did find myself really enjoying one of the Jack Reacher films the other day), but he's very good at what he does.

Can someone who admires his acting make a list of 4 or 5 standout performances?
Again - I don’t think he’s a bad actor at all. But I’m actually having a hard time thinking of many professional actors I WOULD call bad in the last few decades or so.

I’m actually having a hard time thinking of many professional actors I WOULD call bad in the last few decades or so. This is my feeling too. There's a smallish group who seem to be in the majority of major films, and they revolve - Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Cruise - and they're always very good and rarely interesting in any novel way. Not that you should expect any different, of course.

Not that you should expect any different, of course. I think you pretty much have to think back to old tv sitcoms to come up with examples of egregiously bad acting. I don’t know why that is, but there seems to be a level of proficiency almost everywhere you look now. And yes… a lot of the truly bankable stars today are kind of dully reliable. They don’t seem to take many chances, but they are all more than capable. I can’t really knock Cruise as an actor. He’s perfectly good. No surprise. No wrong notes. Just… fine.
