Can someone who admires his acting make a list of 4 or 5 standout performances? I thought his performance in 'Born On The Fourth...' was genuinely powerful with emotional depth, his performance in Magnolia was complex and ambiguous, they're the two you can point to to say 'this guy can really act'. I also thought he was good in "Interview with a vampire" because he really went against type playing someone louche, decadent and aristocratic which really wasn't what you associate him with. It's not a long list admittedly because he decided to go down the blockbuster route.

I’m actually having a hard time thinking of many professional actors I WOULD call bad in the last few decades or so. This is my feeling too. There's a smallish group who seem to be in the majority of major films, and they revolve - Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Cruise - and they're always very good and rarely interesting in any novel way. Not that you should expect any different, of course. Gosling's really good I think. Have you seen "The Place Beyond the Pines"?

No, but I wasn't criticising them. I liked him in Drive.
I think they've all done good work. It's just that you rarely see an unfamiliar face in a big Hollywood film.

Probably..but that's always been the case and anyway Hollywood is irrelevant these days unless you're into franchise films. Gosling has real edge in 'Pines', it's not a Hollywood type performance

I think most of the folks he listed are very, very good. But they seldom get used to much effect. Hollywood isn’t really taking many chances at the big-budget level.

All of this is subjective, i have no proof whatsoever.
I like Cruise, i think he's honest as an actor and does give it his best in everything he does. I do however feel he's trapped in the TOM CRUISE persona. Like one of those past tv actors that's only known for one character and is stuck with that. They can't escape it. With the scientology stuff, i think he's trapped now rather than being a follower. They know shit and he can't upset them. A few co stars were asked if he ever brings it up and they say "No, never". To me, that doesn't sound like someone who manically involved, surely he'd be recruiting big stars left, right and centre. OR! it's pure fight club and you know the 1st rule!!!!. Then there's the shit with his kid, i don't know if he wants/gets to see her, but if it's the latter, you gotta feel for the guy.
