They're certainly not giving them away.
It's too bad - something like this at half the price (less "bookspace", fewer live albums included) could probably sell in far greater numbers.

They did and they didn't. I like box(ed) sets. Why, I even like Blu Ray multichannel audio!
And yet...any option that includes either the former or the latter is far too rich for my blood.
It also doesn't help that I can turn on a radio any time, any day and hear something from this album.

I can't think of an album (maybe Layla) that has fallen so far in my estimation. I loved it from 12 to 20, now I get nauseas being in the same room as a copy. I've probably heard the album 200 times -100 by me and 100 on classic rock radio, one song at a time. If I ever hear it again it'll be too soon.

I've still not heard the whole thing, but I'm not in any rush to and probably never will. Baba's..alright, but for me Townsend loses his songwriting chops once it gets into the 70s

I'm definitely more on the side of 'the 60s stuff is better' but I don't think it's quite that simple either. There are several songs here - and yes, "Bargain" is one of them - that retains their pop sense through all the synths, jamming, and Daltrey's abs. That said, I ain't gonna pay through the nose for a deep dive into what is, at best, their 4th or 5th best record. Maybe the 2-disc.
Kinda surprised it's taken this long. I mean, this is probably their 'biggest' record at this point (whether it deserves it or not) and Townshend seems to like a bit of cash flow, so...

The whole thing is on Spotify.
The 70-71 period for Townshend is a very fertile one for Pete even if it's not popular round here. There's a lot of material, both the Who's Next/Lifehouse songs and extra stuff like The Seeker, Water, Naked Eye, When I Was A Boy etc. You could easily put together a great double album from all this stuff.
But considering the scope and quality of all this material Who's Next does feel like an inferior substitute for something grander and more ambitious. At the same time there are songs I wish were on Who's Next like Pure and Easy even if it is clearly linked to the wider Lifehouse concept ("the note"). Maybe that's why Pure and Easy didn't make the cut but when you realise what Pete wrote during this period you can't help but feel that they could have released a truly killer single album with a vaguely spiritual lyrical bent in keeping with the times:
Baba O'Riley Bargain Going Mobile Greyhound Girl Behind Blue Eyes
Pure and Easy Getting in Tune Won't Get Fooled Again The Song is Over

This is marvellous. A big, chunky rock n roll song that still recalls their 60s period.

As a whole, this period has nwver really clicked with me. I still adore 'Won't Get Fooled Again' though, i dont care how often i've heard it.

I have no objectivity about "who's next" so I won't pretend I do. I'm sure most of us here have had that "this music got me through a rough time" feeling about something. well, sometimes that blows over and sometimes it doesn't. these songs, as a whole, got me through some tough times. I'm still grateful. we got through! hooray for us. I enjoy hearing them.
Having said that, Townshend can go fuck himself. He seems intent on folding, spindling and mutilating this material into an infinite multi-verse of deluxe editions. I mean, I liked "odds and sods" just fine. that's still how I regard most of this stuff - as interesting by-product of something that came out pretty good to my way of thinking.
IMO PT had some serendipity that it ended up the way it did. serendipity don't pay the bills, I guess.
