Excellent thriller, which I thought held the tension all through the film, though some critics say it sags in the middle. Not unlike Charles Durning. Has a remarkable opening scene, which was the obvious inspiration for the opening section of Scream.

I watched that Conny Plank documentary for free on one of my streaming services. I certainly got my FREE's worth. when you watch a doc on someone you like, you usually expect some sins of omission. this is no exception. If you know who CP is then I doubt if anybody you'd like to hear talk about him will be in this or talk very much if they are. (I doubt Holger Czukay is onscreen for two minutes) be that as it may, involving Plank's son Steven gives the film a lot of character. He grew up where his dad lived and worked. the film has a "tell me about my dad" quality which makes it stand out and make take your mind off artists or albums that don't get mentioned. I liked it. Here's a guy who found his bliss making his living helping other people find theirs. they dismantle his studio near the end but it didn't really strike me as sad. some of that stuff will get used. it will live on. the BEST thing about me watching a Conny Plank documentary was how fucking good some of the music sounds to me today. I've been away from a lot of it for a while. His later stuff with Moebius I'm especially enjoying. I didn't know I was missing that stuff. it sounds like music that was made for a reason. who knows what those reasons are and yet there is something in a lot of that music that works as "art" for me. decent movie.

All The President's Men. Don't see what all the fuss is about. Love it, but I can see why others wouldn't. It's a surprisingly subdued film, low on moments of real drama and conflict, it's almost docu-drama. But it really helps if you have a special interest in the period and the case, as I have, I think. Plus I really liked the subtlety of Redford and Hoffman's performances, particularly the way they teased out the underlying tension between them due to the differences between Woodward and Bernsteins backgrounds and temperaments.

I'm not saying it was shit or anything, just not as great as a lot of people say. If anything it shows the hardship and slowness of developing a story while wondering what the other papers are doing.

oh man, I think "All the President's Men" and "Network" are both dynamite movies.
I can see the criticisms of "Network" a little more sympathetically. I always found the "S.L.A." type stuff dated, even when it was new. I mean, there was still some of that going on but Paddy C. clearly missed the "use Western Union" advice about message movies. ALL paddy's movies are opinion pieces. Network might be the supreme "Male Menopause movie" IMO Ned Beatty's speech to Howard Beale & Holden's "Bugs Bunny" kiss off speech to Dunaway should be as famous as... you know...
"I'm mad as hell & I'm not going to take it anymore" Peter Finch absolutely NAILS that speech. He is bat-shit crazy but his craziness is born of concern. craziness is like that sometimes. I love it.
NOBODY was more burned out on "Watergate" when "All the President's Men" was new. I was dragged to see it. the very thought of those movie stars playing those guys was offensive to me. the thing is - I love movies. like anybody who loves movies you know what you like when it WORKS for you. ATPM works for me. it's a goddam Hardy Boys movie! our famous movie stars are poking their noses in the big case until Old Man Nixon can't hide anymore.
if it's on TV I'll leave the room. I probably like "network" more since I have a taste for overripe fruit. still, I can watch a part I like and then leave the room. If I start in on "...Men" I'll watch it through to the end. I liked Alan J. Pakula's movies. they weren't really suspense movies but they got you emotionally involved in what the characters were doing.
another thing about ATPM - I think it's important despite all my earlier misgivings. even if it was made for movie stars to show off - this might be all a younger generation of viewers will really know of "Watergate" I think it's important that people know about it and that there was a time when a transgression like that was universally reviled by anyone who smelled the stink of it.
our sense of smell ain't so good these days.

Pointless film the more i think about it. A film at the end of the day about nothing. If you know the basics of their story, this film address the bare minimum of it. 2 takes aways 1. Dunaway just oozed sex appeal, from the first frame to before her character got killed it's just "DEEEEEEAM". She had to be the sexist woman in hollywood at that time, ridiculous. 2. If anyone can point to a film where beatty shows any, ANY, acting ability, you win a week free in Coan's AirBnB. I just don't see it any anything i've watched of his.
