He HAS lost weight.
That show was alright. Paul Merton's pretty much yer standard mainstream comic these days. Couple of Max Miller jokes to start with, then on to some so-so improv. Was great to see Mike McShane THO'. He's great.
And then Stewart Lee. Some material I'd seen last year, some good routines. But he spotted me in my Stereolab T-shirt
'what's that on your T-shirt?'
'Stereolab'
'Ah - I was engaged to the original singer. Bet you didn't know that, did you?'
'No'
'See - you come here in your Stereolab T-shirt....' etc. etc.

It's a weird thing going to see shows though, isn't it? I mean in general. You pay good money to just sit there for a couple of hours while someone prances about in front of you. It's a wonder it's so popular. I think it'll die out in a few years. Along with the death of culture, of course.

well he came back to me later and said 'actually that's not true. I was engaged to the backing vocalist on the first two singles'
which (I checked) is true (Gina Morris)

Shows in general, ie. concerts, plays, etc. or just standup and other comedy-type things? I hardly go out to see anything these days, but I'm beginning to miss it and keep thinking I should find out a bit more about what's going on in this town. There used to be a couple of free weekly local news and entertainment magazines that had all the concert listings and things like that but they disappeared a few years ago and now I find it difficult to know what's happening! You're just sitting there, you can't move, you have to submit to their specific ideas for however long. And appreciate it. You have to be choose carefully. I've seen too many things over the last few years that have been disappointing. But of course you never know in advance.

I suppose. I've rarely been let down by live music, though, but I hardly ever go to shows where I'd feel financially put out if the band wasn't any good. I think the most I've ever paid (aside from flying to London to see the Stooges) was 70 bucks to a scalper (tout?) for a last minute ticket for Neil Young several years ago.

[/old] Things like that really fulfilled a need. The old print Time Out for London was really useful for that. You had everything in one place so it was easy to look up a film listing or gig or whatever. There's an assumption that the net provides everything now but better, but it's not really true for some things.

Have you checked out some of the vloggers on Youtube? There's a "non-binary" fella called Pete who's like a cross between Nathan Barley and Brian Sewell who rounds up the best of what's happening culture wise in London.
