www.edfringe.com/I'm off to see Mark Watson in a mo. Frank Skinner tomorrow, Jon Culshaw on Friday. Then Frankie Boyle next week, and Paul Merton and his improv lot (Mike McShane!!) the week after. Finally Mark Thomas on the 24th. I only found out recently that the Festival is not curated, so basically anyone with enough money to fund their project can come here and get up on stage and do their thing. This of course is why you have 18 billion acts, 99% of which you've never heard of. I still think it's kind of weird, you've got posters advertising all kinds of obvious rubbish, but everybody here is full of enthusiasm for it. Including my students. Anyway. I'll pop back to write some reviews, probably. Got a few tickets for the Film Festival too. It looks a wee bit better than last year.

Have fun!

Is Mark Thomas still doing the rounds? His tv show back in the day was class. Finding loopholes to stick it to the man.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to that. And it's on in The Stand, too, which is a tiny venue.

I could have sworn i heard Boyle in an interview swear off the Festival. Too much about money etc etc.

I’m off to see Sadowitz and Tannhauser.
I used to say one year I’ll “do” the festival but I have less interest than ever.

The show that was banned last year, or something like that? I enjoyed it a couple of years back but it seemed like the audience didn't know what to make of him, half the time

Yeah.
He can be hit and miss depending on mood but if it contributes to his pension I’ll be happy

Does the Edinburgh Comedy Award still mean something?

Mark Watson was pretty conventional. Not bad, nothing particularly memorable.
EXCEPT...towards the end, four people at the back stood up and walked out pretty quickly. Mark said something like 'couldn't they wait? I'm almost finished!', and someone from the audience shouted 'NO THEY'VE GOT THE SHITS'. Which got the biggest laugh of the night.

Does the Edinburgh Comedy Award still mean something? I don't think so. Comedy in this country feels sort of dead at the moment. Is it just me?

I think i said it before, there's too many subpar comedians around. The kinda people who got told they were funny once and thought, that's it, i should be a comedian.

It's too PC and conformist these days. And too "smart arsey" in that contrived way where at best you get a chuckle or a smile but rarely a proper laugh.
There's a lot of TV comedy like that I find.

Ha i think there's too many british tv panel shows for comedians these days. We need a survival of the funniest, weed out the shit comedians.

Just out of Frank Skinner and he was fabulous. Stand-up doesn't come more relaxed. Big laughs.
