I remember when I first got a job teaching Film and Media. They gave me one of the huge old cameras so I could get accustomed to the equipment. During the weekend my old mate Stu took me out to a park. I was trying to get smooth panning shots of birds in flight, and all of a sudden my mate shouted out "It's William Friedkin!".....well it made me laugh at the time.
He's all about "The French Connection" for me. I can't get enough of the gritty depiction of New York and I love his quasi-documentary style direction. I've never been that wowed by The Exorcist. Would like to see "Sorcerer", which I think he regarded as his great film, and "The Brink's Job" which he kinda disowned, but which has a great cast.

In his memoir, he said that Sonny Bono was one of the very few true geniuses he'd ever met. I always hoped I'd get to ask him about that sometime. R.I.P.

It would be worst if he said just Bono.

Holy CRAP, what a guy. not only did he make some damned good movies - he spread the word.
he pops up in dozens of docs about other filmakers and he is a delightful weirdo. he has a far away look in his eyes when discussing the work of people he admires. I saw one recently that featured a host of well known directors - I quickly started waiting for Friedkin to show up.
I had a friend that made me get us passes to see "to live and die in l.a." no fewer than 5 times. it might seem a weird one to single out but it's a different movie up there on the screen - same as "Sorcerer - there's a certain amount of sensory overload going on and I just love that sort of stuff.
I worked on Hollywood Blvd. when "cruising" came out and people got so upset with that film that they literally tore up the seats! I'm not kidding. the theater put up a disclaimer poster telling people to think carefully before paying to see the movie. I saw it. I'm not saying it's great but I think the reason people got so upset is because it was upsetting! He really could get under your skin that guy.
oh, and back to the movie brain stuff: god bless him for putting this in the world. I think it's nearly as good as "john ford directs" just because Fritz actually seemed to enjoy talking about himself.

The likes of the hunted and killer joe are very good. Still not sure what the fuck was happening in killer joe but i still loved every minute of it. Took me awhile to look at a chicken tender the same way again though.

Sorcerer is on youtube btw
I always liked him. Loved his outspokenness and balls. I only know a handful of his movies but he was still doing good stuff late in his career like Bug.
And, of course, The Exorcist is one of the greatest films ever made.
RIP

I forget the name, but the parts with Friedkin and William Peter Blatty are practically a comedic contrast of personalities. Blatty's thoughtful, quiet and really questions all the decisions made, whereas Friedkin is like a bull in a China shop, and is absolutely certain he's right about everything.

Yes but not for quite some time. Polar opposites yeah. Friedkin was one of these force of nature people I suspect. Huge will, a bit challenging I'm sure but often with great instincts and refreshingly bullshit free. No doubt with a big ego too. I mean the story about when he slapped the priest fella to get a stronger reaction after Karras jumps out the window is pretty outrageous but then he'd just turn around and say, "well it worked didn't it?".
