Text messaging and Whatsapp and all that baloney are much more intrusive in a way because it means people are continually looking at their phones all day. What a world!

That's true, but Whatsapp allows you to maintain conversations with people that aren't as formal as a letter or email or as immediate as a phone call. I'd say that on the whole, Whatsapp is a boon. For example, we had a work whatsapp group for a recent residential trip that allowed 20 staff to send important messages regarding kids (injuries, lost items) etc to everyone else. It was extremely useful for people making ad hoc decisions. My wife whatsapped the shopping list for me this morning when I went into town for important supplies such as LEMONS and CRISPS.

My sister rings sometimes and I know that I'm going to be talking to her for am hour at least - so sometimes I go straight to voicemail as I might be busy or whatever, and then I'll call her back at a more convenient time. Convenient for whom?

Would it be a good idea to have a Whatsapp Preludin group so we can inform people before we reply to their posts?

Text messaging and Whatsapp and all that baloney are much more intrusive in a way because it means people are continually looking at their phones all day. What a world! a few years ago I had a couple of teenagers at the house. they were ignoring each other, snapping their gum and looking at their phones. I went out the front door and saw something amazing. No fewer than three dozen exotic birds were alighting on the telephone wires right outside our home.
I threw open the door. "come, come! look, look!" the teenagers sighed and sulked to the door. "LOOK!" I pointed at the parrots, cockatoos etc.. large birds in all colors all taking wing close enough to hit with a rock. the teens looked up, snapped their gum, said "uh-huh" and went back inside looking at their phones.
what an interesting option it is to grow up only looking at things that interest you. I spent a lot of time growing up looking out car windows while people droned on with things that really didn't interest me but I'd like to think SOME of it got through my thick skull. I seriously doubt either of those kids remember those birds. they're fine youngsters, don't get me wrong. It was just a bit of a letdown that I was the only one of three people who enjoyed what seemed like a remarkable moment.
life goes on.
I don't call anybody except people who are waiting on me. people stopped answering their phones YEARS ago. Am I the only guy that thinks texting is a great, big, hairy pain in the ass? I mean, I do it, most people I know prefer we communicate that way. fuck, it might as well be morse code. it takes a long time to say a few things.
I'm not getting a chip in my brain so I guess I might as well get used to it.

I refuse to do it. I've only sent about two texts my entire life.

Do you bank online? Surely you must get text notifications about security etc?

Oh just ignore him. He's on one of his I-reject-the-modern-world-and-all-its-evil-aspects dribbles. It's tiresome.

I don't mind text-exchanging so much. I like it in ffact, not that I do it a lot. A short exchange can soometimes rreplace a half-hour of rambling on about nothing. Not in all cases of course. When I text, I insist on spelling out every word and use proper punctuation. The whole kit. The great majority of people I exchange with reply in kind, mosst times. (This way, since it requires a tiny bit of effort, they tend to not text me willy-nilly. Grumpy old pedant.
