Insane. Have you heard of a fella called Alex Honnold? He's really quite incredible and pretty cool too. I mean, down to earth, humble, funny but he does the most remarkable things. I'm sure for all of us this is simply terrifying but as human achievements go it's staggering really. Imagine doing this stuff?

It goes without saying that I'm an extremely boring, unadventurous person. So I tend not to have bobbies which will eventually end my life in an easily preventable fashion. So what he does is kind of an achievement, but it also seems rather unnecessary, he's not accomplishing anything that can't be done more safely. I mean, fair play to him, but you wouldn't want to be a family member of his, would you?

It's an astonishing achievement because if he makes a mistake he's dead. It requires a kind of perfection therefore just to do this stuff. Yes, you could do it with ropes - and he does to practice and plan the route of course - but the achievement is in the risk and making it faultless. If you watch his interviews he is disappointed if he makes mistakes or if it's not as aesthetically pleasing as he would want. He wants to be able to just enjoy the climb and experience it in a heightened state I guess. There is something almost childlike about him.

It's a very man thing isn't it?
Just going out there, risking it all for the hell of it.

He'll end up falling at some stage though.

He'll end up falling at some stage though. Quite probably. There's a predictable history of free climbers dying of course. It's so odd in that way because it's basically the opposite of how we live our lives i.e. we tend to avoid risk and certainly avoid physical risk of course. Maybe I'll start rock climbing. I bet it's popular with the ladies. "Yeah I do a bit of the free soloing in my spare time...."

I used to rock climb when I was younger. Nothing like that guy though - The Adirondack Mountains and the Hudson Valley. I'm way too old for that now.

In the early 90's I lived with a couple friends in a warehouse space with 14-foot ceilings, and my one friend Jason installed rock climbing grips on the brick wall to get into his sleeping loft. No ladder - just the grips. He and his girlfriend used to clamber up the wall every night, then down again in the morning. It was pretty funny. He lives on the west coast and climbs mountains now.
