As many of you probably know, tomorrow is the 60th anniversary of the JFK assassination. It was an extraordinary, seismic event for 15-year-old me, and continued to echo through the following decades - I followed the various conspiracy theories, read Rush to Judgment, took great delight in its appearance in two of my favourite books - Illuminatus! and Libra - and even got to co-edit the Murder Casebook special issue on the assassination. How was it for you? Those not sentient at the time, how did it affect you growing up, where does it place in your personal histories of the 20th century?
Oh, and as it happens, the day after tomorrow, the 23rd, is the 60th anniversary of the first broadcast of Doctor Who, which (with the exception of the late 60s, when I was at Uni and couldn't get near a TV) I have followed ever since, and the US release of what remains a top ten LP for me, Phil Spector's Christmas album. So, quite the weekend in my life...and of course there was the live on TV murder of Lee Oswald on the Sunday

I saw the tv announcement. I was a few months old, sitting on my mother's lap, so I'm not sure how good my focus was. I also saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan - I was a few months older, same situation, so my memory is a bit hazy. As far as the Kennedy assassination went, It was a pretty big deal growing up. I heard about it all the time - the birth of cynicism, where were you at the time, did the CIA do it , movies and books based on theories, etc. I always had a low opinion of our government, but I'm not sure how much of it is due to the assassination and how much is that we've just had lousy political representation for the past 60 years. As far as Dr. Who is concerned, I've never seen it.

IMO, all the Dr. Who you need is the original theme music...
as for JFK, I remember not being able to watch cartoons. they kept showing a train. it made no sense even though the grown ups kept explaining.
who did it and why were the first really ugly political arguments I witnessed. pretty tame by today's standards but pretty shocking to a young good-natured fellow. people who seemed to be friends could all but have their hands at each other's throats simply over if Oswald acted alone or not. I agree with Freep that something happened cynicism-wise. My Goldwater loving grown-ups were blown away by JFK's assassination.I'm pretty sure that if Obama or TRUMP had died while in office that an awful lot of people would have danced and broken plates like Zorba the Greek. something happened.

I remember the first time I heard of the Dead Kennedys in the late 70's, many people were offended by the name (too soon.) The Dead Garfields or the Dead McKinleys would have been ok, though.

I had just turned 3 by JFK's funeral. I remember seeing the tv set in the living room and wondering why so many people were in one place (maybe thinking they were all inside the magic box?). It was very sunny outside and our living room was bathed in quite intense sunlight.
It meant nothing to me of course, but I still very clearly remember the sight for some reason.

I move back and forth on what happened. I saw an interesting programme the other day that strongly suggested his wounds were altered. An entry wound on the throat was visible during the first medical examination, many of the Dallas doctors/surgeons are still around and they were adamant about it. It's important because it proves there must have been a second gunman. But its frustrating because at this point we'll never get the full truth.
