Okay time for me to bite the bullet. Ever since Fange's thread, I've been thinking how underrated/underappreciated The Cocteaus are.
1985 Aikea-Guinea - The Cocteau Twins
Their early Bansheeisms didn't do a lot for me and they seemed just another 4AD band. But from about 84 onwards it became apparent that there was a keen musical intelligence and that they had an angel for a singer. I love the stately build of this track, with its Gregorian style backing vocals, which is quite symphonic. The layered build into the chorus - heard from 1.42 onwards - is really stirring and when Liz releases those trilling vocals the effect is one of pure transcendence.
I note that some of you who nominated in the canon still haven't taken the opportunity to get in one last choice, so do so quick! I probably won't get round to doing the first of the canon appraisal threads until late Friday, so you've got about 48 hours.

Since none of you bombheads have done so, I'm going to nominate one of the great game-changing guitar singles of the 1960s, psych guitar sounds avant la lettre. Worth inclusion just for the way that four-note flourish announces its imperious nature. The version of Why? on the b-side is pretty nifty too, making it the greatest rock double-sider of the 60s, and possibly of the whole history of rock.
