#78 As the advert says, still got it . He's a funny old bugger ain't he? He hits form here and is seemingly in the mood to produce some of his favourite things, skewed sleaze and mawkish sentimentality, often in the same sentence. He still manages to ensure that he can destroy the flow by including songs such as average guy and classic lou-isms " I used to look at women in the magazines , I know that it was sexist, but i was in my teens" from his ode to the opposite sex on the track Women. Joined by the superb, sadly ,a little under used Robert Quine, Reeds ,as the New York times wrote " hard, thoughtful, unflinching songs" pretty much flow along rather nicely. The NME review contains the line " smarmy self-satisfaction" oh well. I love it, he is magnificently grumpy and pathetically coy. It is probably top 5 for me , maybe even top 3. Give it a spin preludinestas, you might like it, now most of you are grumpy , yet sentimental old farts.

It's one of about four solo Lou records I don't know so well. There are some fine renditions on the 1984 Live In Italy release which I played to death when I was a teen, and I dare say with R. Quine exploding all over the shop they might even be better than the studio versions.
I read something recently where someone said Lou had complained that no-one really 'got' him. Well, a lot of the time he didn't exactly HELP, did he? the arrogant fuck

Same exactly for me, James. He really goes all out on 'The Kids', especially. It's really affecting. Wonderful production particularly on that one, with the thrumming bass sounds, booming drums, and kids crying.

Blue Mask was a nice comeback for the Louster, after the uneven 'The Bells' and the overly polished blandness of Growing up in public. And if we forget Mistrial exists, then it started a nice seven album run
