I just think of it as soul without the songs.

More R&B than soul.

I'm aware that 'Northern Soul' does not refer to US geography, and don't need to be reminded. And I know it's not a misnomer in terms of the origin of the description. It's only a misnomer in terms of being the only genre of music I can think of that is identified by the critical evaluation of it rather than anything to do with the creation of it.
Maybe Child Ballads, but at least that's from vaguely the same geographical location...

Thing is with Northern Soul is that there's a reason some of them weren't hits to begin with.
I've had a few compilations over the years, and while I can bring to mind about half a dozen absolute bangers, there are loads of really unremarkable records.
Cheap productions, lacking in hooks etc. But it's one of those genres where the rare and collectable element is a huge factor to the aficionados, which I always felt clouded their judgement of the actual music.

You could say the same thing about Film Noir, no...?

POINTS AWARDED to anyone who can provide examples of tunes which STRIDE/STRADDLE two (or even all three!) of these genres I'm not sure all three is possible; would LOVE to hear one though if someone can think of one! A song that - to my ears, at least - straddles garage and Northern Soul would be this one... The Shells - 'Whiplash'. Produced by Jerry Butler and released via Curtom Publishing.

And this one...
The Underdogs - 'Love's Gone Bad'
A Michigan band from the same scene as Bob Seger, doing a Chris Clark cover - what's not to like?
