did you watch Ken Russell on Big Brother? how did he come off?
would you have kicked him in the balls if you'd had the chance?

I like a lot of his movies but in interviews I get the impression he might have been something of a dick.

I like a lot of his movies but in interviews I get the impression he might have been something of a dick. I met someone who was working in the film department of a uni, I think Southampton, Russell was a visiting lecturer on the filmmaking course. He was always getting pissed and insulting the students, they had to get rid of him in the end.

I met a guy who was a producer on "Altered States" He said, as far as he was concerned, Ken Russell contributed to Paddy Chayefsky's eventual heart attack.
the project started with Paddy calling the shots. he quit when the studio had spent enough money that they were committed to keeping Russell on. according to the guy I met Russell insulted Chayefsky at every opportunity.
I'd read Russell's autobiography and it was pretty nasty. He devoted much of an entire chapter to Richard Dreyfuss' toupee.
Criterion is featuring really exceptional prints of some of his key movies this month. I'm reminded how impressed I was with his style when I first started obsessing on movie directors.
I'd heard he'd been on Big Brother. I don't usually enjoy that sort of stuff but some of his later South Bank show appearances were self caricature to what I found a VERY entertaining degree. I'm curious.
He's been on my mind. I doubt I'll have a chance to watch "the Devils" with all the people in & out of the house lately. I watched most of "the boyfriend" again. I quite like it. it's a lark but I think it fits pretty snugly with his other stuff. Clearly it was the "innocence" of those early movies that appeals to him but it's the faces of the NOT innocent people that are most interesting.

the only one of his cool, artsy South Bank shows I can find on You Tube. If you've never seen "Russell on Russell" promise me you won't die until you do. meanwhile...
I love how committed he was to the cheesiest chroma key type effects. it gives the narration parts a real Sid & Marty Kroft sort of quality.
