More ignorance! I've already commented, albeit not in depth. Battle of Evermore only for me. To be honest, I can't recall many iof the other tracks (stairway aside), but the idea of listening to it again feels like an absolute chore. Its just not what I want from music, generally.

I've got an older brother, you ignorant bastards. For some reason, I thought he was younger than you, sorry. JL (currently posting as blue for those who don't remember the Refuge) has (much) older brothers, too, but hardly a regular poster. Get thee to the family ways thread and set the record straight.

Whereas of course young Americans piled into souped-up Cadillacs and headed downtown, laughing and holding on to each other while singing along to Aerosmith and sharing a doobie (or whatever the hell they call it) You should write ads for soft drink companies, JC.

Ha ha!
I was waiting for Charlie to say 'well that's not quite true' - but maybe he realised it was a PREPOSTEROUS image 🙂

Four pages and not a word about Plant's bawling vocals or cod-mystic/borderline-misogynistic lyrics....

What did you think when you first heard it or heard about it, and how about now?
I was 14, early '82. I'd started off with Punk, then taken a deep dive into the 60's, following Lennon's murder. By this time, I was up on all the big names, was a Beatles obsessive, worshipped Hendrix and wished I had been at Woodstock etc, yet Zep were still an unknown quantity to me. Probably because they had zero media presence and didn't release singles in the UK. In fact, as a kid, I'd seen 'Led Zeppelin; sprayed on the wall of the subway that I used when going into the next little borough. I thought that Led Zeppelin was a bloke's name. I thought that he made 'Heavy' music, but that was literally my entire impression. I knew that the old Top Of The Pops theme was a Zeppelin tune done by someone else and called 'Whole Lotta Love' That was all of my knowledge.
Anyway, a school friend who became the drummer of our very first little band had an older brother who had been in the last year at our high school as we were in our first. He and his mates looked like The Furry Freak Brothers. Those types who totally dismissed punk as immature and without merit.
Anyway, me, this lad and a couple of others in our year were the ones that played instruments and liked old music. One day, this kid turned up with this album with no words, band name or anything on it. It was by Led Zeppelin. I was curious but no more. He stuck it on and I loved the first two tracks instantly. He told me that there was a 'classic' called 'Stairway To Heaven' coming up.
I didn't get 'The Battle Of Evermore' at all, but liked Stairway. Then he either didn't put side two on or it didn't register, but before he left that day, I taped 'Black Dog', 'Rock n' Roll' and Stairway as the first three on a C90, which I seem to remember filling up with highlights from my Dad's copy of 'Deja Vu', with Hendrix and Beatles tracks on the other side.
I played the tape to death, but didn't properly get into the album until years later when I bought it and the debut on the same day. Of course now, I love it, when played occasionally and I voted for every track.
Where does it stand for you in terms of their catalogue, and in the wider rock genre?
It's not my favourite of their albums, that would be 'Physical Graffiti', but it's probably their best overall. Their crowning achievement. The hype and plaudits are right. It's their most fully realised statement.
What are your fave songs? Pick the ones you like in the poll and tell us why (if you feel like it).
Fave songs are 'Battle Of Evermore', 'When The Levee Breaks', 'Rock and Roll' and 'Four Sticks'
What do you think of the cover art?
It's cool and still has a genuine enigma about it.

Four pages and not a word about Plant's bawling vocals or cod-mystic/borderline-misogynistic lyrics.... The bawling vocals arguably had never sounded better - and inarguably never would sound this good again. The cod-mysticism never sounded better, either. As for the misogyny, if that’s even the proper term for it, it’s fading at this point. Mind you, I don’t know why a big-leg woman wouldn’t have no soul; that line always puzzled me. And who was telling him so? Maybe they were referring to a particular big-leg woman… still, it does seem unkind of Percy to repeat such scurrilous and essentially unprovable rumors about a lady.
