I thought this was a Mick Ronson song until recently. I'm a big fan of his solo debut, 'Slaughter On Tenth Avenue' and have an indelible memory of my old mate and I tripping and listening to the Ronson album, which was still new to me and brand new for my mate. Hearing Ronson's version of this was intense and euphoric on acid, but I can't imagine what we would have made of Annette's version while in that state. Another new discovery, this is wonderful stuff.

She's great. She made an album with Paul Bley (her husband at the time) that is a total mind fuck.

I saw her live at the first Womad festival, very good then followed by Rip Rig and Panic.

Only familiar with her because of the Bruford/Holdsworth stuff.
Ok voice. Sounds posh. A world away from the classic jazz voice.

I had the Sky-Skating album - my gateway - X-Dreams and the Love's Out to Lunch single. While I enjoyed them all, collector's mania never set in - she has more than a dozen albums, some as collaborations.

Ok voice. Sounds posh. A world away from the classic jazz voice. Dunno where the posh came from. She was born in Brooklyn, grew up in CA, friends with Tim O'Leary and Ram Das... Intrigued to know what you consider the 'classic' jazz voice. To me, her light tone and pitch has hints of Anita O'Day and Annie Ross, although I don't know of many female jazz vocalists working within a modern jazz set-up (i.e. not Ella, Billie, Dinah or Sarah).

I knew she was American, but not specifics. Regarding the voice: it just sounds affected or mannered or something. There isn’t any bluesiness about it- and I don’t just mean ‘blackness’; that would be too lazy. I think it added a bit of flavour to the Bruford stuff (though I’m only really interested in that because of Holdsworth, but I wouldn’t want a whole album of it. There was no eroticism. At all. I’m not a huge Holiday fan, but there was something visceral about her voice. Same with the other ‘classic’ singers. Bit of a cliche maybe. But Winehouse had ‘it’ too, until things turned unfortunate.

I'm doing a semi-deep dive on her. so far, mainly that album. I must say that I have VERY mixed feelings about her voice myself. Having mixed feelings isn't really a deal breaker for me. it's wild hearing something new to me that is SO far up my alley. I think all those criticisms are scrupulously FAIR. BUT, I think this weird, affected unwillingness to be pinned down might be what puts the "cult" in her cult status. she is SO far up her own ass that while I find it refreshing, it IS taking a little getting used to. I'm anxious to hear the one that was supposedly inspired by hearing J.Beck's "Blow by Blow" I guess she liked it so much she hired most of the band. those were the days!
her use of electronics on that "im the one" album have dated less to my ears than a lot of other stuff in those long ago patch cord days. I mean Tonto's Expanding Head Band sounds WAY more dated than this stuff - to me, anyway and I know a thing or two about sounding dated.
