The 12" remix emerged in the mid-seventies during the Disco boom, having been utilised extensively by producer Tom Moulton for records that would serve a particular purpose on the dancefloor. Perhaps most notable early on was Patrick Cowley's lysergic reinterpretation of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love", creating an absorbing and undulating take on the shifting arpeggio-driven melody. From that moment on, the 12" remix took on a life of its own for some time, and bled across into the "new wave" movement.
One of my favourite is Horn's expansive and jazzy take on Propaganda's "Frozen Faces" - an epic ten minute rework.

My favourite Propaganda 12" was the Duel/Jewel mash up. Which was then further expanded on cassette.
All done by Stephen Lipson, Horn only did Dr Mabuse then concentrated on Frankie.

I used to get 12” records with extended mixes because there’d sometimes be an extra, non-album track, or something else worthwhile. Just like a diligent fan should, right?
The extended mixes, in every case, were fucking tedious. What was I going to do? Dance around my bedroom like an idiot? Fuck that.
I suppose the sleeves were bigger.
