Notorious Byrd Brothers Axis Bold As Love What the hell is WRONG with "Artificial Energy"? It's a splendid start. I love that track - 'punk' Byrds.

Watch That Man: I know I'm on my own about it round here, but I have loved this track ever since 1973. Years ago I could have placed it on a Bowie top 5 (I have probably done that). Not now, but I still consider it an excellent album opener. The Stones cover is certainly weaker (and definitely out of place in the album) but the weakest for me is Jean Genie (I can feel the parade of open mouth emojis coming)
WLWH title track is maybe the one I like the most from an album I'm not especially fond of.
I don't think Rainy Day Women is the weakest on BoB. It would be in the bottom half, but I rate it over Pledging My Time or that Leopard Skin thing.

some of the songs from that period are these weird "power loops" where you just get caught up in the thing until it's over. it's hard to regard if something has merit or substance when it's just sort of pummeling you. I think the live "...follow you down" is like that. maggie's farm and this one too.
EDIT: just to be clear, I think this is a GOOD thing.

Not only do I love "RDW #12&35" - it conjures up a HELL of an atmosphere, and I've been chasing that lightning in a bottle abandon for ages - but, I think opening your double album with that kind of wild chaotic celebration is...that is absolutely where it goes in the track-listing.
Alternately - where would you have it (barring "the cutting room floor")? And...what number would you open the LP with?

I'm gonna pick an album that is assuredly not widely loved by the Preludin masses.
Wild Life by Wings.
An album whose low standing, I think, LARGELY stems from the fact that it opens with the two (possibly three? DEFINITELY two) weakest numbers in sequence.
It took me decades to even discover the gems on side two (mainly "I Am Your Singer" and "Some People Never Know", but...I am generally pretty into Side Two and the title track).
