And, to answer Coan's question - Dylan is absolutely the artist who would be perverse enough to deliberately open an album with an "obstacle".
(Actually, now that I'm listening, the TWO opening tracks of Skyline are...questionably sequenced)

Just played Elton John's Don't Shoot Me ... today and it might be controversial, but I think it is a candidate for this. Daniel is a major reason why I don't often play this album (well, Daniel and Crocodile Rock). I see it as an early sample of the blandness that would populate his oeuvre after Captain Fantastic.

I love the song "Daniel", but I know what you mean. You start out in the dentist's office, and only after that do you realize there's a real band on the rest of the songs.

Not too fussed about 'Tell Me Why' on Neil's big LP. And doesn't Suede's second album start with 'Introducing The Band' or some such underwhelming thing?

Not too fussed about 'Tell Me Why' on Neil's big LP. Yeah, it feels makeweight and underwhelming compared to a lot of NY things from the era/album. As an opener, it feels...odd/wrong, somehow? My uninformed guess is that there may be an element there of deliberate scale manipulation (start with your smallest thing, and gradually build out, which...with the title track second, DOES seem to be the aesthetic). As a collection of those very specific recordings, this strategy may create (underwhelming opener or not) less anticlimax overall.

New Order's Technique for me. 'Fine Time' is a good single in its way, connecting to the dance scene, but it feels a bit of a novelty whereas the rest of album is much more interesting.

"Harborcoat" on R.E.M.'s practically-perfect Reckoning. I don't dislike the song, but I always thought it the weakest one. Had they swapped side openers - "Second Guessing" opening Side 1, "Harborcoat" on Side 2 - that would have made a substantial difference.
