His Count Floyd character was an homage to late night regional late night creature feature hosts. We had a couple in the SF Bay Area - Bob Wilkins and John Stanley. I watch Svengoolie these days on a little cable channel on my selection.
Loved this character.

Flaherty was amazing.
Obviously, his full range of characters on SCTV speaks for itself (his Ward Cleaver alone...Jesus), but...the sort of hapless, well-intentioned, stick-in-the-mud humanity of Harold Weir on Freaks and Geeks was Godhead, and...yes, even his dopey patsy character in Happy Gilmore was pure Flaherty. His filmography is ridiculous - for as well as we think we know his body of work, there's a lot of "Oh, shit - he was in that TOO!".

Candy, O'Hara, Levy, Short, Moranis had his time (Honey, I Shrunk the Kids), Andrea Martin in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The only thing guy got left out a little was Dave Thomas. His Hope to Moranis' Woody Allen was legend.

Dave Thomas wrote a book and it was pretty good. it seems like his brief shot at Big Time Stardom pretty much sickened and repulsed him.
before SCTV went to NBC they did a thing with the rock stars who really want to be comedians. it went from the old "Fantasy Island" TV show to a Road Movie to the Wizard of Oz. it was on at like 2 in the morning but when it was done we looked at each other on the couch like a car had just bust through the wall. we were flabbergasted. there was NOTHING like that on TV at the time.
Flaherty had a really sweet quality. I always got a kick out of seeing him in other stuff when he'd pop up. usually with his Normal Guy smile.
you know, I got pretty choked up when Levy and O'Hara got emmys for "Schitt's Creek" I guess because I never really expected any SCTV people to get lifted on anybody's petard. same as when Martin won a Tony. sure, Candy worked a lot & Moranis was very high profile for a while. Short continues to be fully appreciated. still, it feels like a special little club. even when people know they're good - they maybe don't know HOW good.
If you know Joe Flaherty from Count Floyd then you KNOW how good.

I can't add much, but SCTV meant a LOT to me, so this is pretty sad news. I must admit, though, that until now I had no idea Flaherty was American!

A tribute from a perhaps-unexpected source... in The Real Frank Zappa Book, FZ talks about how, once his band learns a tune, they work on the attitude(s) with which the song is played. Frank calls this "putting the eyebrows on it."

Flaherty was from Pittsburgh, so that's why the W. Mifflin, PA, reference.
