Why would Husker Du be in this vile grouping?

Not sure what's Spandau and what isn't, which means I can't place anything I've liked OR hated by them, so I guess they get my vote as the other three all have at least a few songs I like a great deal.
And actually Husker might have fewer than the other two! The Carpenters are the only band here I can honestly say I actively like.

Has to be Spandau. Hadley's horrible foghorn voice, the whole aesthetic..
Dire Straits are the original dadrock band, yet I have a soft spot for 'Sultans of Swing'.
The Carpenters, when carefully curated can be wonderful. The sound of my early childhood, but they work on other levels..
Husker Du are Husker Fucking Du.

The only band who made a song I love is Spandau Ballet, though every other track is shocking, and Tony Hadley looks like a Tory.
The Carpenters are just about as hateful as music can get.

I guess I'll say Dire Straits. Knopfler knows his way 'round a fretboard, but I can't imagine that I'll ever want to hear any one of his songs again.

The only artist here who I can say I've never heard a single track to ever interest me in any way are the supposedly 'credible' Husker Du. Beyond their narrow idea of rock music as this loud, muddy thing, there's not much there, no real character or colour. Plus they looked like they'd spent their lives washing dishes in a diner. The Carpenters are the best thing on here by some distance. There's a craft to what they do and Karen has a lovely, pure voice. Sure sometimes it gets a little too saccharine, but there's also a tender beauty to their best stuff. Early Carpenters are actually really interesting when they were doing a kind of very jazzy sunshine pop, similar to what Gary McFarland was doing with Wendy and Bonnie. The track below is fantastic, Karen lays down a proper jazz groove, nothing 'lightweight' about this at all.
I'll give Spandau Ballet a partial defence. The first few records had a pretty distinctive Teutonic atmosphere, all stiff rhythms and grand gestures, I rather liked them. Even their brief glossy funk period had some merit, 'Instinction' is a pretty good pop record. However it's their besuited yuppie power ballad commercial peak that forms their reputation and those records were, indeed, dreadful. Dire Straits were, early on, a humble take on American roots music that kind of worked on its own modest level. I still like 'Sultans of Swing' a lot. The MTV headband years were dire corporate rock though. At least they had the good sense not to stick around too long. The worst? Well Spandau plumbed the lowest depths, so them.

Count me in the "Husker Du don't belong in here" camp.
I can take a few of early Dire Straits, but most of their stuff varies between fucking bore or offensive shit. I can like The Carpenters in a tongue-in-cheek way, though I wouldn't voluntarily play their songs ever. Spandau Ballet are abysmal in my world. So there.

I agree with most of this, although I'd give Husker Du a little more praise - there's the odd half-decent 'rock' 'track' here and there. But the way some folk jump up and down for Zen Arcade like it's some kind of alt-rock masterpiece really does leave me scratching my head. That's an interesting Carpenters tune but surely it's atypical? Some of their songs are fine, but it's not exactly incorrect to think of them as sappy. I remember running off to hide in a cupboard upon hearing 'On Top of the World' as a kid (something my nanna owned on vinyl). I'd rank the other two bands more or less equally - they mostly produced stools, a lot of what were HITS were actually obnoxious, but early on they were at least tolerable - in places.

I voted for Dire Straits, by the way, because their worst songs are worse than anybody else's worst songs.

I voted for Dire Straits, by the way, because their worst songs are worse than anybody else's worst songs. This may be as loathsome a song as anything I'll ever hear. Whatever affection I might have for "Sultans.." does absolutely nothing to mitigate this.
