Ok, This is Not A Love Song was played on t'radio t'other morning, and my first thought was, I don't think I've heard this since I was drunk in The White Horse, and that pub has changed its name twice since then. But my second thought was, wouldn't a thread on meta-songs go down an absolute storm on preludin. What are the best songs that reference themselves or conventions of song in a smartarse way?

We're all searching for meaning, Jimmy. Some find it in unexpected places.

Waltz #1 and Waltz #2
by Elliot Smith
or, more obnoxiously
Pop Song 89 by REM

"Last Song" by Edward Bear seems to really dig into the "I'm writing/singing this thing" fourth wall demolition.

You could mention about half a dozen Clash songs that fit the bill!

Oh, like part time punks ? 'One Chord Wonders' would be a better punk example, stuff where the artefact is referring to itself, as a comment on its own creation. In Postmodernism, they called this self-reflexivity.
