And while I admire Neil Young's principled resistance to corporate sponsorship, I can't imagine anyone listening to "This Notes For You" for pleasure.

"Deacon Blues" by Steely Dan (I'm so committed by the time he does it, that I'm like "You know what? It's cool.")

Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger" (which I adored in real time, and assuredly still feel warmish about) pulls a really clumsy reference to the form/performance that always irked me.

Ok, This is Not A Love Song was played on t'radio t'other morning, and my first thought was, I don't think I've heard this since I was drunk in The White Horse, and that pub has changed its name twice since then. But my second thought was, wouldn't a thread on meta-songs go down an absolute storm on preludin. What are the best songs that reference themselves or conventions of song in a smartarse way? I would rather talk about this track. Its bloody marvellous!!!

In my view one of the very best lyrics. Some nice tunery, too

I'm SURE there's some Robert Wyatt or Soft Machine songs that do this.....

I'm SURE there's some Robert Wyatt or Soft Machine songs that do this..... Yeah, but you don't really need to go there.

One that I love, in spite of its cleverness:

"Fire and Rain" also an outlier in many ways.
