First issued as a 3 min. single in 1963, before being released as the centerpiece of Donald Byrd's A New Perspective LP in '64, 'Cristo Redentor' was written by pianist/writer/arranger/A&R man/generally multi-talented mofo Duke Pearson while visiting Canada... no, it was Brazil, of course. Byrd, ever the questing musical soul, had discussed with Pearson about blending jazz and the blues with the gospel/spiritual music they had grown up with at church and in their neighbourhoods; the album featured songs by both of them, trying to mix those musical elements together in exciting and exploratory ways. The personnel on the session were - Donald Byrd – trumpet; Hank Mobley – tenor saxophone; Herbie Hancock – piano; Kenny Burrell – guitar; Donald Best – vibraphone, vocals; Butch Warren – bass; Lex Humphries – drums; Duke Pearson – arranger; Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson – choir direction; Unidentified vocalists: Four men (two basses, two tenors) and four women (two altos, two sopranos). Rudy Van Gelder - recording What do you think of it? Hit, shit, or somewhere in between?

I would file this under "mood music" & i would say it's a HIT.
it's like "ebb tide" or "theme from a summer's place" only better.
it's a time machine. welcome to 1963. smoking or non-smoking?
all kidding aside, i think this one is decided by how you feel about the vocal. I love it.

This might have been the first Donald Byrd album I ever heard, and...I should have known just how much magic awaited me.
Big "hit" on this track.
