I got to thinking about him this week when "I Want to be Straight" came into my head, one of those songs that came out in that formative period when I was around 10-11, just as I was starting to think about music and its many good and bad facets. I know the New Boots... album very well having had it for many years ('Hit Me...' was a big song in Australia at the time, and still is on classic radio) but I really don't know much about his earlier music, or anything he did after the early 80s. So, help a brother out and let's do a deep dive into Dury and his music. What do you think about the various music he's made with different bands or solo? What should I check out first or avoid?

I can't really help you with a deep dive, Ange. All I know is the famous stuff, really.
I heard 'Hit Me...' when it came out, immediately loved it and quickly obsessed over it, played it over and over on my little mono cassette recorder (taped off TOTP), and tried to make out the lyrics and write them down (I didn't get very far - all those references!)
My mate Stan bought Do It Yourself a few years after that (I didn't hear the debut in full until much later) and we used to do silly dances to this mad thing (it definitely appealed to our barely-concealed slightly-violent tendencies)
That album isn't as good as NBaP, but I'd recommend it as the next thing to go for if you haven't heard it. I can't actually remember much from it now, the songs aren't as strong but the band's cooking. The wallpaper series of covers is kind of cool.
I wish I'd have seen him live. I love this
Oh, and there's the biopic. Which I've seen. But also can't remember. It had good reviews, though.

Cool, I should revisit that album then, i have heard some it but not the whole thing i reckon.

I'm more of a casual fan rather than a massive fan so I can't really help with the deep dive stuff.
I love his way with words, humour and general persona, sort of music hall but with a real edge - Max Miller meets Dada. The Blockheads were a hell of a band of course, although the combination of their super smooth funk with Dury's abrasive vocals doesn't always work for me. But he and they were genuinely unique.

Ha, yeah i love the wordplay, even if it is very much of its time in some ways. The B-side of 'Hit Me...'.

I only ever had "new boots.." and "do it yourself" I'm very fond of both. I stream songs from others but I can't really say I deserve the designation "Deep Diver" "Sex & Drugs & Rock and Roll" was basically the unofficial theme song of World Famous KROQ until the dreaded "rock of the 80's" format took hold. "new boots.." is loaded with Ian Dury's ...um.. .unique personality and that band is really tight. I like "DIY" even better. here's the one I can't live without. I don't spend too much time trying to figure out what it's about. maybe I'm better off not knowing because it gets lodged in my head for days.
Did anybody else see that BIO movie with Andy Serkis? I'm curious but I suspect it's a downer.

Oh man, I had forgotten all about this one! From the classic adaptation of the book 'The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole...'
The mid-80s production sound is profound, and complete with sax solo, but the tune itself just fills me with a warm nostalgic glow. And Dury's voice is like a warm woolen blanket for the mind.
