I can't really recall how it happened, but I somehow stumbled on this from the so-called Golden Age of the board (i.e. before I joined and ruined everything) and took a look at some of the names I knew well, and FUCK ME that's a veritable warren of rabbit-holes laden with wrongheadedness verging on stupidity, poor writing and brittle egos, not only from the usual suspects but also from earlier incarnations of members of this august assemblage.
Haven't got a point to make (not for the first time), but bloody hell...

All started by the same man - not sure I even remember that.
We tended to just rattle off thoughts back then, that's my first impression from a quick scan. You'd see a thread and you'd jump in to say something, and if the subject was popular then there'd be a bit of a scramble. On this board, and probably also on BCB itself these days, most people tend to spend a bit more time writing something before posting.
We did another series of threads a bit later, which I think was called the BCB 130, and each of those was started by a different member. Those might be a little more interesting....

Also - there were some great writers there. Leg of Lamb, for one.
The best ones tend to leave. The rubbish ones hang around forever.

I just checked out the Kraftwerk, Can, and Scott Walker threads. The first two are worthless excrement, the Scott Walker thread interesting because of Coan, G, and Jimmy. Doesn't look like I missed much of a golden age, tbh.

Doesn't look like I missed much of a golden age, tbh. It's funny how people so often do that, isn't it? anything from the past is better than now. Anyway. The board was certainly way more active than it is today, so most threads would take off quickly, with a range of views. Things happened 'live', too - you'd see posts being added every couple of minutes. I enjoyed that. I dare say it was a more important part of many of our lives back in 2008. There's no going back, though, despite the occasional mentions of 'Facebook recruitment drives' and daft stuff like that

There was also more of a sense that it hadn’t all been talked to death yet.
I don’t start a lot of music threads here. Not because I stopped caring about music. I just know the contours of most of the conversations before they happen. We all do.

I think that's all true. It was all little less precious back then. You weren't required to know in depth an artist's entire back catalogue before commenting. To be honest I preferred it.

That was after I joined. It was beyond the BCB 130. They were basically essays and comments rather than the formula of the 100. I seem to remember I wrote a few....

There was also more of a sense that it hadn’t all been talked to death yet. I LIKE talking things to death. the Stones latest is their best since "Exile". McCartney has an innate sense of melody. Englebert Humperdink's sideburns are truly magnificent! yadda yadda yadda
I've managed to work up quite an appetite.

There was also more of a sense that it hadn’t all been talked to death yet. BUT two... I LIKE talking things to death. anyway, it's all gone. I don't know where people who want to talk about music go these days. I'm sure the desire is still there, but we're not seeing long and in-depth discussions on message boards (although CaB is very lively). Facebook groups are popular.

Facebook is different, though. It’s rarely a deep dive unless somebody dies.

Don't get many in-depth threads on Facebook, though Jeff K's group and the No Wave group are occasionally really interesting.
Rateyourmusic is probably the most active forum I know. Don't get much 60s-oriented chat on there though.
