I mean it's shit isn't it? But I'm interested to see if there are any defences. The records highly performative display of appalled indignation is almost unintentionally comic, but you can tell Geldof took his 'big statement' very seriously.

It's not displaying for me. Is it "Mondays"?
Ach - nevermind, just saw the poll question.

It's a piano-based, and probably piano-written piece that has elements of Bowie, Elton and Queen, for better or worse. It's ambitious and I think Geldof actually keeps a lid on it throughout. Can't say I hate it.

I think rat trap was better in displaying indignation.

Can't say I hate it. No, I suppose I should grudgingly admit it probably works on its own terms. But there's a grandiosity to it I find toe curling. They have a lot in common with U2 don't they? The same earnestness, the desire to make big, but rather empty, humanistic statements. Is that an Irish thing? I don't know, maybe it was a coincidence they were both from Dublin.

I think rat trap was better in displaying indignation. That has the same kind of pointless indignation - ' Down in her pocket she finds 50p, is that any way for a young girl to be!'

Yes, I think it's a Celtic thing. You also get it with third-rate acts like Del Amitri, Hothouse Flowers, Deacon Blue, dare I say Big Country too.

They were a weird act - they would alternate between Springsteen/Graham Parker big ballads and goofy arch herky jerky new wave. They had a pretty big following in the US. - not Michael Jackson big, but they were known in my backwoods high school. Mondays wasn’t my favorite, but it was different enough from what was popular here at the time that it was a bit interesting.

I was looking at their wiki discography and they were going top 20 right from the first single.

I hadn't thought about it, but it really does sound like Queen. I can imagine Mercury's hammy dinner theater bellowing delivery while the rest of the band does their cod opera "Galileo" thing to the "tell me why" parts.

Can't say I hate it. Same. I was never a big fan, but i don't hate it either. I don't think I can name a single other tune they did, which i guess sums them up for me.
