Pete Best aside, I was thinking of guys in bands who left or were kicked out right before or as a band peaked.
Barry Andrews of XTC Vince Clarke of Depeche Mode Howard Devoto of Buzzcocks Jools Holland of Squeeze Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols Stuart Adamson of the Skids Eric Bell of Thin Lizzy
Of course, Matlock was thrown out, but I wonder about the other guys. Were they just feelin' themselves a bit too much and thought they'd do better on their own or did they hate the music they were playing that much that they felt compelled to leave?

Gene Clark. The Byrds were at their commercial height when he left. Brian Jones too, although he was kicked out. McKay and Morris from the Banshees.

Define "peaked". If you mean 'made the big time' then Bon Svott.

John Cale. Arguably. Clyde McPhatter (one for the oldies there)

Alan Price getting kicked out of, or leaving, the Animals in 1965 really hurt the band. You can't screw with a formula that good and expect similar results.

Arguably, Chris Bell. Though he looms large over what is often regarded as their best album.
Oh, and Richard Hell. Though he's probably happier in the long run.
